Annie Scruggs

Annie Mae Scruggs was born on April 10, 1931, to Benjamin and Effie Smith in Ansonville, North Carolina.  The family later moved to West Virginia where Annie Mae accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age.  In 1980, she joined Tabernacle Baptist Church, Columbus, Ohio, and was an active member who served on the Kitchen Committee.  During the pandemic, she participated in the conference calls for Bible Study, Prayer Service, Church School, and Sunday Morning Worship.

Being a loyal, hardworking, loving woman of God, Annie Mae was faithful to her employers, her family and friends, and Tabernacle Baptist Church.  She retired from the State of Ohio.

Annie Mae taught herself how to crochet, and she loved to share her amazing gift with others.  From newborns to the nursing homes, she worked tirelessly to present them with crocheted gifts.  She enjoyed preparing meals and baking cakes for small family, friend, and church gatherings, or larger events like weddings and family reunions.  She also helped make awesome gifts to be distributed to encourage others.   Annie Mae was a model for using her God-given talent to build others up and to reveal the love of God.

On September 22, 2021, Annie Mae slipped away peacefully to be with the Lord.  She is preceded in death by her husband, James Scruggs; parents, Benjamin and Effie Smith; and siblings, Benjamin Smith Jr, Lydia Moore, and Naomi Lilly.

Annie Mae is survived by her sister, Charity Driver; brother, Andrew Smith; special nephews, Morris (Muriel) Scruggs, Benjamin (Diane) Smith Jr, and Waymond (DeeDee) Moore; special nieces, Deborah Driver, Pam Driver, and Lelia (Ronald) Vernon; many grandnieces, grandnephews, and other family members who loved her; special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Stepney (Annie Mae’s neighbors), Hyler Ray, Marvalene Simon, and Mary Wingfield.

We celebrate a life well-lived Annie Mae’s love touched many relatives and friends, crossing generations.  Her beauty, laughter, and faithful love will be sorely missed.
