Belinda E. Garrett

Belinda Evangela Garrett was born on December 4, 1961 in Columbus, Ohio. She was the first born of five girls to the union of Lovell and Barbara Garrett. To her family, she was affectionally known as “Lyna”.

Belinda was the product of Columbus City Schools where she attended Gladstone Elementary, Linmoor Junior High, and Linden McKinley High. Belinda was very active and participated in many extra-curriculars activities such as softball, volleyball, playing the drums in the band, and performing as a majorette, and track statistician. After leaving high school, she spent the bulk of her career with city and state agencies. At the time of her death, Belinda was employed with Huntington National Bank.
Belinda was blessed by God with the gift of music and was known for tinkling the ivories. She was able to both read music and play by ear. She rendered her talent to the Lord by playing for various church choirs and accompanying her mother when she sang solos or her sisters when they sang as the Garrett Sisters. For the past 17 years, she was a loyal and faithful member and served as the head musician of Christian Outreach Ministries since its inception in April 2003.

Belinda was known for her love of food which she showcased in her catering business, as well as being an avid gardener. She truly had a green thumb and would willingly provide advice and tips to anyone who wanted to have flourishing flowers or gardens. She also enjoyed watching crime and court shows. So it was no surprise when she joined the neighborhood watch to keep order in her Forest Park community.

Belinda’s daughter and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She conducted herself as the “cool” aunt so that if any of her nieces or nephews needed to talk about anything, they could. She loved doing for her parents and would sometimes act as if she were parenting them.

In the early morning hours of August 11, 2020, God called Belinda home.

Belinda leaves to cherish her memory her parents, Lovell and Barbara Garrett; her only daughter, Niokia “Nike” (Kaalis Hampton) Garrett; two grandchildren, Karmello Garrett and Krïst Garrett; four sisters, Lovella Garrett, Caroline Harris, Melita Garrett Abbey, and Ruth (Mark) Garrett Small; seven nieces and nephews, Langston Garrett, Auston Garrett, Jalonn Harris, Justin Smith, Jordan Smith, Brooklyn Garrett, and Camille Harris; two great nieces, one great nephew; Deborah Frye (a cousin to whom she was especially close); Kevin S. Braswell (who was like a son); and a host of relatives and friends.
Belinda will be greatly missed by all those who loved her. Sleep on Belinda; we love you but God loves you best.
