Charlene Sudderth

Charlene Clark  Sudderth,  age 94, of Lilly, TX and Columbus, OH passed away July 15, 2016. Born July18, 1921 to the late  Jessie and Jim Clark. Preceded in death, husband, Jack Sudderth; mother, Jessie Clark-Stephens; father, Jim Clark; loving stepfather, Curtis Stephens; sister, Rosa Wilson; brothers, Artie and Odell Clark.  She is survived by her daughter, Jackie Sudderth-Carter.

Charlene Sudderth deeply loved her family. She was a devoted  teacher, mother, godparent, wife, friend, aunt, soror, sister and a servant of God.  She worked for several years in Texas before relocating to Columbus, where she served as Assistant Director, Paxey’s Play School.  In addition, she worked for Columbus City Schools beginning at John Burroughs Elementary, and retiring from Woodward Park Middle School, where she was selected by Columbus Council of PTA’s, as Teacher of the Year.

She has been a dedicated member of Shiloh Baptist church since 1947.  Through the years she has served as a member of the Senior Choir, Member and President, Torch Bearer Sunday School Class, Women’s Day Co-chair, E. B. Delaney Missionary Society, Co-Chair, Dr.  J. W. Parrish and Henrietta Parrish, International Student Day, Saturday Lunch program, One Hundredth Church Anniversary Journal Committee, assisted Daddy Jack Sudderth with his numerous plays, and the Scholarship Committee.   Serving her community was also very important.  Hence, she was a member of the Black College Awareness Program, Upward Bound, Ohio Wesleyan University, MLK Women Service Board, Tour Guide, Ohio Historical Museum, Food Pantry, National Assoc.  Mental Illness, Advocate.

She was a proud graduate of Huston-Tillotson University, and The Ohio State University.

Charlene Sudderth, a charter member since 1987, helped to establish the Lunch Bunch.  As a member, she served in various capacities, always giving of herself and seeking excellence in every encounter:  She served as chair, for the second scholarship luncheon, held at the Hyatt Hotel.  Paula Wilkins, Eastmoor graduate, health professional, was the recipient.

Charlene Sudderth  was a charter member of   National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., Gamma Alpha Chapter and also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Columbus, OH Alumnae Chapter.  She served in a variety of capacities in both organizations and remained active until health prevented her from participating.

She leaves to mourn, her daughter, Jackie Sudderth- Becker, Goddaughters: Helen Paxton-Arnold, Maggie L. Burnes, and a of host nieces, nephews, other relatives, sorority sisters, neighbours and friends.

Visitation 9:00am and Funeral 10:00am Friday July 29, 2016 at Shiloh Baptist Church 2500 Cleveland Ave 720 Mt Vernon Ave, Columbus, OH 43203.
