Charles Dungy

Charles E. Dungy, a US Air Force Veteran, passed away on November 21, 2021.

Charles was born July 23, 1935, in Meridian, Mississippi, Charles is the son of the late Henry Dungy and Helen Jones.

Charles lived a blessed life with a legacy of service and giving. As a child, Charles attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Meridian, Mississippi and later attended St. Cyprian Elementary School in Ohio, where he lived with his father. Charles continued his education at Champion Junior High and East High School.

After high school Charles enlisted in the US Air Force. Airman Basic Charles Dungy received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. The awards are representative of the character, honor, and integrity in which Charles lived his life. Following Charles’ career in the Air Force he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service where he retired at the age of 55 with 32 years of service. Charles was a committed, hard-working man his entire life and he encouraged others to do the same.

Charles was proud of his career, but his most prized accomplishment was the day he married his loving wife, Betty L. Johnson. Charles and Betty married in Columbus in 1958 and later had two sons, David & Jason whom he loved dearly. Charles was a devoted and loving husband and father.

A role model for his sons and others in the community, Charles was civically and socially active for many years. He served as president of his neighborhood homeowners’ association and was a member of The Gloria Lodge No. 89 of the Free & Accepted Masons where he was recognized many times for his, work, commitment, and dedication. He donated monthly to veterans’ charities and others in need, without hesitation.

Charles was a laid-back, calm, private man, but would always have a humorous story to tell you about his life experiences. His stories and anecdotes will live on in our hearts forever.

Charles was a big Classic Jazz enthusiast with well over 400 albums.

Charles was preceded in death by, wife, Betty L Dungy; parents, Henry Dungy and Helen Jones; stepmother, Mary Dungy; stepbrother, Otis McGhee; grandparents, E. Turner Dungy and Louisa Flynn Dungy; aunts and uncles, Lillian Julia Armstrong, Jesse Aaron Dungy, Hazel McClendon, Myrtle Taylor, Clatie B. Dungy, Helen Louise Dungy, Frances Lucille Robertson, and Inez Richardson; special aunt, Lillie Belle Flynn Jones; first cousins, Sharon Dungy Peters, Jessie Ford, Jr., Delores Dungy Long, Dorothy Taylor Hall, Harry Taylor, Jr., Berniece Ford, Lovell Armstrong Hellen, Beverly Jackson, and Vernon Jackson

Charles is survived by, sons, David E Dungy and Jason E Dungy; nephew, Arvin Mc Ghee; St. Louis and Meridian Cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation 10-12:00pm Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE NORTH, 2500 Cleveland Ave.

Interment at Evergreen Burial Park.
