GUESS,
Charles L. Guess, Sr., also known to many as Charlie, was born in Powellton, West Virginia to Iler Cranor Guess and Thomas Guess on February 21, 1926. He was the oldest of seven children. Charles grew up during the Great Depression with Herbert Corpening as his loving father and role model during his formative years. His father’s early lessons endured with Charles during his entire lifetime. Charles was educated at Bluestone High School, until he joined the Army infantry during World War II. Charles fought with the Army in Asia, and shared many humorous stories of his experience with friends and family.
On August 9, 1946 Charles married Marthella Lunsford and to this union was born Charles Jr., Harold, Pamela and Patricia. Charles also had one daughter, Brenda, with Ruth Watkins (Alexander), and one daughter, Monique, with Frances Cutter. Charles and Marthella moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1953, but he spent many years residing in Ashtabula, Ohio with his parents and siblings. Charles spent the last 25 years of his life in Columbus. He was a devoted grandfather to 30 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Charles was an excellent artist in oils and woodcarving. He spent his final years building many beautiful birdhouses. He loved animals and enjoyed National Geographic and any learning and historical channels. Charles was a hardworking individual, and worked in the West Virginia coal mines as a young man. He also retired from Rockwell International, in 1988 but never really quit working. Charles worked for Charleen Hinson of Hinson Limited until April 2010.
Charles Louis Guess, Sr. passed away on October 22, 2010 in Columbus, Ohio. Charles is predeceased by his parents, two brothers William and James Corpening, one grandson, Gregory A. Campbell, Jr., his former spouses, Marthella, and Frances Cutter. He is survived by his children, Charles L. Guess, Jr., Harold H.C. Guess, Pamela (Jackie) Leslie, Patricia (Tyrone) Malone, Brenda Matthews, Monique
Guess, and ex-spouse, Ruth Watkins. Charles is also survived by his brother, Roosevelt (Louise) Corpening, his sisters, Josephine Hunter, Gloria Jean (Frank) Gums, and Barbara Jean (David) Brown. “Grandpa” will be dearly missed by all his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends. REST IN PEACE UNTIL THE RESURRECTION.
