Charles Loggins

Charles Earl Loggins was born to the union of Sylvester and Para Lee (Smoote) Loggins on November 19, 1943, in Sunflower Co., MS. He accepted Jesus Christ as the head of his life at a young age and joined Hayes Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He married Mattye Jo Dunn, his lifelong sweetheart and literal “girl next door”, in 1965.

Charles earned his degree in agriculture from Alcorn A&M where he was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc. fraternity. He dedicated 41 years of public service with the USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service with assignments in multiple locations including Indiana, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Illinois, retiring in Ohio.

As much as the man loved to labor – from picking cotton and driving school bus in his youth, to volunteering as a firefighter and EMT, to being a favorite cashier at a number of quick service gas stations – Charles loved his family and friends even more! Affectionately known as “Charlie”, he never met a stranger. He routinely went above and beyond to lend a hand. Charles was the embodiment of a Good Samaritan.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Sylvester and Alfred; sister, Ruby (Langley) Powel: niece RuthAnn Fulllilove; and infant granddaughter, Courtney Mitchell.

Charles is survived by his bride, Mattye Jo; sisters, Rubye Loggins of Chicago and Ella Burchfield of Atlanta. Also; children, Casandra (Curtis) Mitchell of Chicago, Anita Marie Dunn Loggins of Knoxville, Charles Daniel Loggins of Columbus, and Michael Dunn Loggins of Columbus; grandchildren, Chelsea, Caitlin, Curtis III (aka, Trey), Caleb, Camille, and Corinne Mitchell, Nicole Miller and Amy Terry, Stockton (Julie), Pyper, and Ronin Loggins (Melissa), Michael, Jr. (Ashleigh); great-grandchildren, Sophia and Sebastian Mitchell (Tiera; nieces and nephew, Gwen Lynette (Bo) Beckom, Wilma Loggins, Patsy Loggins, Rita Loggins, Nita Loggins, MaSonya (Meyers) Scott, Lilly and James, and Aishia Burchfield and SaNiiyah; and a host of other relatives and friends.
