Charles Mayes Jr.

Charles W. Mayes Jr. passed in peace, Thursday August 13, 2020 at the age of 73.

Charles was born January 20, 1947 to Louise Mayes and Charles W. Mayes Sr. in Columbus Ohio. He worked several years as a youth leader at the Ohio Department of Youth Services (TICO), and was a delivery driver for Spirit Corp.

Charles left an indelible impression on the people whose lives he touched, and he will be remembered as a spirited individual, who contributed immeasurably to the world around him. His kindred spirit, contagious laughter and charming personality was clearly evident in his personal sacrifices of time and energy to his family, friends and community. Charles had a true gift for making everyone that crossed his path feel special, honored, and loved. The legacy of care, commitment, and strength he established will surely live on.

His love for boxing led him to be a strong advocate in the boxing community where he served as a volunteer training coach. His favorite boxers were Sugar Ray Leonard and Shane Mosley. Moreover, Charles could often be found laid back listening to music from the genre Doo-Wop and his favorite vocal group-The Miracles. His favorite artist was Smokey Robinson and favorite rapper, Shotty Mayes.

He would always end his phone calls and conversations by saying “ Love You From the Heart” and he truly meant it.

Charles is preceded in death by his father Charles W. Mayes Sr., Mother Louise Mayes; adoptive mother Katherine Earley and grandson Kevin Kendrix. He is survived by his loving daughters Tonya Mayes, Carla Mayes, Sonja Smith, Charo Hargrove, Katina Mayes, Erica Guess,Tracy Mayes and Kierra Branch. Sons, Maurcie Yates, Carlos Mayes, Brian (Paula) Valentine, Charles Coleman-Mayes. Proud grandfather to a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
