Deacon Nathaniel Shields

Nathaniel Shields was born in Columbus Ohio to the late Arthur and Beatrice Shields on July 30, 1933 and departed this life into eternal rest on July 24, 2020.

Nathaniel was educated in the Columbus Public School System. He received an Honorable Discharge after serving three years in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Deacon Shields grew up in the American Addition. Deacon Shields was the owner of Shields Painting Company; he painted many homes in the city as well as painting the exterior of The Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He also worked at the Metropolitan Housing Authority for 15 years and retired from The John Glenn International Airport.

At Mt. Zion, Deacon Shields served as a Trustee before he became a Deacon and currently served as the Chairman of the Deacon Board. He also participated in the Male Chorus going back to when Former First Lady, Omanis Thrower was their Music Director. Another activity where you would find Nathaniel Shields was at the Baptist Training Union which met at the Church on Sunday evenings at 5:00 pm. Deacon Shields was a generous supporter of the Pastors who led our Church congregation and always gave of his time and energy to the work of the LORD.

As a young man Nathaniel loved to dance. Deacon Shields was a man who loved to help others and was kind to everyone.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Joann Shields; brothers, Steve, Rudolph, John and Robert Shields; sisters, Janice Bernard, Aretha Robinson and Roberta King.

Deacon Shields leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Celestine “Tina” Harvey Shields; sister Kami Muwwakkil; sons, Kevin W. Martin and Bruce (Mariola) Ross; daughter, Birdie (William) Pickens; 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; 39 nephews, 40 nieces, and a host of other relatives and friends and The Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church Family.

Private Visitation 9:00 AM and Funeral Service 10:00 AM Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1535 Dewey Ave.

Masks and Social Distancing are mandatory.

Interment at Union Cemetery Association.
