Zale was born on November 30, 1954, in Monroe, Louisiana, to Sophronia Staten and Charles Newton. He graduated from Carroll High School, then briefly attended Louisiana State University. After college, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. During his years of service, he earned a number of commendations. He was awarded a National Defense Service Medal, a Navy Unit Commendation, an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Rifle Expert Badge. By the time of his Honorable Discharge, he had worked his way to become a Sergeant.
Shortly after his departure from the military, he moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he met his loving wife, Annette. He worked at a number of jobs and retired from the United States Postal Service, after working there for over 30 years. In his spare time, Zale loved playing basketball, running track, repairing things around his house, gardening, landscaping, watching sports and Old Westerns, playing the lottery, and spending time with those that were closest to him. Zale will be most remembered for always lending a hand and helping his family whenever they needed him.
He is preceded in death by both of his parents, Charles Newton and Sophronia Staten, brothers, Bobby and Larry Treadway, Charlie Newton Jr., nephews, Gregory “Mack” Treadway, Terry “Boom” Allen, Charles “Woo” Staten, Mark “Duke” Newton, Jeremy, and niece, Jamecia Ward.
Zale leaves to cherish his memory and legacy, his wife, Annette Newton, stepson, Leon Alexander, special son, Phillip Newton, grandchildren, Shanequa, Dayon, Kira, Vira, and Paradise Newton, brothers, Herbert (Kathrine), Donald (Ludell), sisters, Jackie, Patricia, Debra (Lamar), Althea (Eddie), Lisa, and Carolyn, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins.
