Dolores Alvarado

Dolores Marie (Barnes) Alvarado was born to her parents Harry Ellsworth Barnes and Ora Mae Barnes in Park Ridge, Kentucky on April 6th, 1937. She was their third child and eldest daughter. Having accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age, Dolores was baptized in 1949 at the Revelation Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio by the late Reverend George W. Sangster.

Dolores moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1950 to reside with her Uncle and Aunt, John, and Mattie Hughes, where she attended East High School. She graduated from East High School in 1954.

Dolores received her Associate Degree (Two-year Teaching Certification) in 1956 from Capital University and moved to Cleveland, Ohio to teach in the Cleveland Public School system. She also took summer classes while in Cleveland to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

After teaching for several years in Cleveland, Dolores moved to Chicago, Illinois to study at the Baptist Missionary Training School which is connected to the Moody Bible Institute.

From Chicago, Dolores went straight into the missions’ field. She began in Puerto Rico and served as the Missionary Educator at the Collegio Bautista (Baptist College) in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico. It was there that she met Dodanin Alvarado who was home on leave from the Army after having served in Korea. She was renting a room from his older sister Anamin Alvarado y Mendez.

Dolores married Dodanin Alvarado, who by then was a combat veteran of the Korean and Viet Nam Wars, in January of 1964. From their union, three sons were born. Dodanin (Danny) in November 1964, Johnathan in December 1965, and Pedro in October 1972.

Upon her husband’s discharge from the Army in 1967, they moved to Columbus, Ohio where Dolores resumed her teaching career with the Columbus Public Schools. During her career with the Columbus Public Schools, Dolores earned her Master of Arts in Foreign Language Education from The Ohio State University. She was a distinguished educator in the Columbus Public School system for 34 years before retiring and devoting her life to spreading the Gospel of Christ throughout the world.

Dolores was a missionary in several countries around the world to include Peru, Ecuador, Taiwan, China, Tibet, Hong Kong, and Nepal. She never got tired of spreading the Gospel of Christ. Eventually age slowed her down and she devoted the rest of her life to the church and to her family. Dolores passed away and went on to Glory on July 17th, 2022.

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Ellsworth Barnes, and Ora Mae Barnes; brothers John and Vernon Barnes; and sister, Sue Virginia (Barnes) Hoskins. Dolores is survived by her three loving sons, Danny (Jessica), Johnathan (Antoinette) and Pedro (Anastasia) Alvarado; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
