Doris Goodwin

Doris Jean Hickman Goodwin was born July 31st, 1932, to the parents of Otis and Mary-Bell Hickman in Shuqulak, Mississippi. Doris received her formal education through the Shuqulak public school system. After high school she attended Mary Holmes College in West Point, Mississippi, where she excelled in her studies and graduated with an Associate Degree in Education. After graduating she taught as a teacher in Mashulaville, Mississippi for one year and then moved on to teach at the Noxubee County Training School for an additional three years.

Doris had the privilege of meeting the love of her life George E. Goodwin at an early age. They grew up in Shuqulak, Mississippi about one mile from each other. Doris and George dated for about a year when George was called to go off to the Army. On a short furlough, George came home and asked for Doris’s hand in marriage. The two became one on December 29th, 1954, and were married in Meridian, Mississippi. After an honorable discharge from the army, George and Doris moved to Marion, Ohio in 1955 and resided there for 45 years.

After her second child was born, Doris started working part-time at Hotel Harding in various roles and worked for the Holiday Inn within the housekeeping department for a couple of years. She assisted personal individuals with house cleaning services and performed other diverse jobs. In 1971, she started working for the McDonald’s Corporation as an opener and a front counter server. She continued working there until she retired in 1987.

Doris has always had a heart to serve others as well as being a servant of the Lord. She always put God first in her life and never questioned the pathway that God brought her through. Her life is a true testament of what a God-fearing and virtuous woman should be. She mastered the art of being a strong woman mentally and physically while still having compassion and maintaining her poise.

Doris was sweetly saved and attended King’s Temple Church in Marion, OH for 49 years under the following pastorships: Elder John Thompson, Elder Melvin Terry, Elder Charles Smith, and Elder Tyrone Kaiser. She served in numerous capacities within the church such as Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Secretary, Missionary Treasurer, and as a faithful choir member where she was known for her beautiful soprano voice. Any time the kitchen needed assistance for dinners or district meetings, Doris was right there serving in whatever capacity she could. She and her husband moved to Columbus, Ohio in 2004 to be closer to their four children. They became members of Grace Apostolic Church, where Bishop James Gaiters was her pastor.

Doris loved her family and taught them those qualities she possessed. She was blessed to have a great husband and wonderful children, but when those grandchildren and great grandchildren came, it was evident that they were her joy! Her favorite thing to do was to cook wonderful meals for her grandchildren anytime they were around!

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Mary-Bell Hickman; brothers, Russell Hickman and Robert Hickman; sister, Anna Mae Craig; and granddaughter, Alexandria Goodwin.

Doris leaves to cherish in their memories, loving and faithful husband of 66 years, George Goodwin; four children, Sandra (Gregory) Ward, Columbus, OH, Edward (Jennifer) Goodwin, Williamsport, OH, Frann (Michael) Lowery, Columbus, OH, and Jerome (Belinda) Goodwin, Columbus, OH; brother, Roger (Yvonne) Hickman, Columbus, MS; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. There are several cousins and in-laws, a host of nieces and nephews, and friends.

Visitation 11:00am and Funeral 12:00pm Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at Grace Apostolic Church, 1743 E. Lakeview Ave.
