Dorothy Ann Scott

Dorothy Ann (Belle) Scott was born December 2, 1930 to Alvin B. and Amanda R. Belle in Aberdeen MS.

She attended Aberdeen Elementary, Jr. High and High School from which she graduated. She was president of the Student Council, a member of the Glee Club, and served as Class Secretary.

The Belle family attended St. Paul Methodist Church, where Dorothy participated in MYF (Methodist Youth Fellowship) and sang in the Junior Choir as a teen. She also served as assistant pianist for the Junior Choir. Dorothy remained in Aberdeen until after graduation. At 19 years of age, she chose to relocate to Columbus, OH, where she resided for the remainder of her life.

In Columbus, she was employed by Grant Hospital, where she met her close friend Betty (Harris) Hughes. Later, she became an employee of Columbus Public Schools, from which she retired in 1995.

She joined First A.M.E. Zion Church (formerly Caldwell Temple) in 1950 where she met her husband, Albert. They were married 56 years until his passing in 2012. The first time he saw her, he told his sister-in-law Virginia Scott, “I saw my wife at church today!”. Dorothy was also active in her Columbus church home. She taught the Morning Glories Sunday School class for more than 20 years, served as Sunday School treasurer for a number of years, taught Vacation Bible School for many years, and was an active member of Unit #5. Dorothy was no stranger to the church kitchen, where she cooked, served and cleaned for MANY church events. She also prepared and served meals for the Saturday Community Lunch program sponsored by the church. Dorothy was active in the music ministry at the church, singing in the Chancel Choir, the Voices of Praise, and the Concert Choir.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents , Alvin and Amanda Belle; husband, Albert Scott; brothers, William and Calvin Belle; sisters-in-law, Arceola, India, and Jessie Belle; Virginia, Ethel, and Sue Jett Scott; Willie Latner, Aileen Winfrey, Sadie Morrison, Corinne Weaver, and Tammie Lou Hammons; brothers –in-law, P.M., John, James and Jerry Scott; dear friends Artemis Cook, Doris Fields, Frances Abbott, Roy and Marianne Washington, Willie Mae Johnson, Constance Scruggs, and Blanche Eakins.
