Emily J. Maye

EMILY JEAN MAYE, affectionately known as “Jean” to many, was the youngest of 10 children born to the late William and Emmaline Brown in Switchback, West Virginia. In 1946, she graduated from Aracoma High School, Logan, West Virginia.

As a teenager, Emily was baptized after she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. In 1990, she joined Tabernacle Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend Odell Waller. Before her health failed, she was a member of the Missionary Ministry, Pastor’s Service Ministry, Church School, Kitchen Committee, Church Anniversary Committee, and Women’s Day Chorus. In 2007, she was an honoree of the Legends of Tabernacle (women who labored in the Lord throughout their 70+ years).

After 30 years of employment, Emily retired as a Dietetic Supervisor at The Ohio State University. She later worked for an additional 20 years as a housekeeper for a prominent family of the community.

Emily’s great-grandchildren, Keylon and Keymarra, who she called Komo and Maudi Sue, were an amazing source of pride and joy. She took pleasure in hanging out with them. Emily enjoyed walking and was a member of the former walking club that was formed at Tabernacle Baptist Church. She will be remembered for her warm smile, hearty laughter, and caring spirit.

On February 6, 2020, Emily answered the call to leave her earthly home to be with the Lord. She is predeceased by her infant grandson, Joseph Kelly Richards; parents, late William and Emmaline Brown; brothers, William Brown, Jr., Lawrence Brown, and Emmett Brown; sisters, Cleo Barnes, Virginia B. Douthet, Ernestine Alexander, Ruby Taylor, and Dorthea Martin.

Precious memories of Emily will be forever treasured by her daughter, Dorothy Ann Richards; grandchildren, Kenric Richards and Keylee (Marshall) Draper; great-grandchildren, Keylon L. Richards, Marshon Lanier, and Keymarra Draper; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation 10:00am and Funeral 11:00am Friday, February 14, 2020 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 2188 Woodward Ave.
