Emma Dungey

d. April 4, 2024

Emma Kate (Sanford) Dungey, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2024, in AZ at Hospice of the Valley at the age of 77.

Emma was born on December 6, 1946, in Springfield, Ohio, to proud parents Emmet William Sanford (deceased) and Emma Cathryn Coons Sanford (deceased). Raised alongside her siblings, George E. Sanford, Rose M. Depp (deceased), Harry A. Sanford, and her foster brother Carleton Abbott (deceased), Emma grew up on a farm in Pitchin, Ohio, where she learned the values of hard work, family, and community.

After graduating from Southeastern High School in South Charleston, Ohio, Emma pursued her passion for hairstyling, attending Shaw Barber College in San Antonio. She furthered her education at Clark State University and Sinclair Community College. In 1967, she married Jonathan E. Jones Jr, and together, they welcomed their cherished daughter, Amy Rachelle. Later, in 1978, she married William H. Dungey (deceased) and embraced his extended family as her own.

Emma was a devoted member of Second Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a Deaconess, participated in the usher board, taught Sunday School, cooked for church events, and lent her beautiful voice to the Gospel choir. She also found joy in serving as an usher at Clark State Kuss Auditorium. She was actively involved in organizations such as the National Council of Negro Women, Alpha Phi Chi Sorority, and Champion Lodge Eastern Star #1.

In her free time, Emma enjoyed indulging in her hobbies, which included solving crossword puzzles, collecting art and unique frogs, traveling, dining out, and visiting her favorite destinations, Florida and Arizona. She had a special affinity for black art, which adorned her home and brought her much delight.

Emma's favorite Bible verse, Psalm 121, reflected her unwavering faith and trust in the Lord throughout her life's journey.

Debra Joe (Billy) of Hoover, AL, and Lenise (Larry) Knight of Centerville, OH, her nieces who held a special place in her heart. Her grandchildren, John Isaac and Katelyn Buycks and other nieces, nephews, and relatives whom she loved, and they will also feel her loss profoundly.

In lieu of flowers, Emma requested that all donations be made to Second Missionary Baptist Church, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, or Hospice of the Valley in AZ in honor of her memory and her commitment to serving others.

Emma Kate (Sanford) Dungey's legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
