Eugene Clemons, a cherished member of the Mansfield community, passed away on October 4, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on April 17, 1937, in Mansfield, Ohio, Eugene was a man of integrity, dedication, and unwavering devotion to his family, friends, and country.
Eugene is a 1956 graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, and later served in the U.S. Air Force, where he played basketball, worked as a Clerk and Military Police. Following his military service, Eugene embarked on a remarkable 43-year career at General Motors, retiring as a respected General Foreman. His work ethic and leadership left an indelible mark on all those he encountered.
Beyond his professional achievements, Eugene found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time on the water, indulging in his passion for boating and fishing. His competitive spirit shone through in his love for softball and basketball, sparking camaraderie and joy among teammates and friends.
A pillar of faith within the community, Eugene was a charter member of The Oasis of Love Church of God in Christ. His involvement in the Men's Ministry and Choir reflected his unwavering commitment to serving and uplifting others. His love for Cleveland sports teams and The Ohio State Buckeyes was well-known, adding an extra spark to his interactions with fellow fans.
Eugene's numerous memberships, including a lifelong commitment to the NAACP and 32-year dedication to the American Legion Post 676, underscored his deep sense of community and service. He held various positions including former commander which spoke to his ability to lead with grace and compassion.
Eugene was preceded in death by two children, Reginald Greene, Veronica Allen; parents, Alonzo and Lillian Clemons; and siblings, Joe Clemons, Henry Clemons, Willie Pearl Jefferson, and Classie Jackson.
Throughout his life, Eugene's greatest source of happiness was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Melinda Clemons of 58 years; daughter, Sonia (Michael Journigan) Clemons; sister, Ollie Brooks; brother in law, Eddie Harris; three cherished grandchildren, Rafael Clemons, Ashley (Harry) Birdow, Dion (Rebecca) Allen; five great-grandchildren; two aunts, Lorvine Stovall and Lurlean McClain and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends, all of whom were touched by his kind and generous spirit.
As we gather to celebrate the remarkable life of Eugene Clemons, let us remember his strength, wisdom, and love that touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will forever remain in our hearts and memories, a shining example of selflessness and compassion. May his soul find eternal peace and may his legacy continue to inspire us all.
