Evangelist Carmen Cooper Walker departed this Earth on Wednesday, March 5th, 2014 at her home of 40 years on Clifton Avenue. She was born to parents Simeon and Adelaide Daisy Cooper on July 1st, 1931 in St. Mary’s Village, Trinidad, as the sixth of 8 siblings. Her father, Reverend Simeon Cooper, was the founder of St. Mary’s Baptist Church, at which Carmen taught Sunday school for many years. She was also an active member of the People’s National Movement political party and the St. Mary’s Better Village Council, in which she performed in several art and folklore competitions. In 1965 Carmen migrated to North America; she spent three years in the US Virgin Islands before moving to New York City, where she opened her family restaurant. In 1975, she moved to Columbus, Ohio accompanied by her husband Vernon Walker. She resided in Columbus for the last four decades of her life. In Columbus, Carmen worked for Franklin County as a daycare provider and became an active member of Triedstone Baptist Church under the leadership of The Honorable Bishop Jerome H. Ross. She also affiliated with Asbury North Methodist Church. She was passionate about teaching the word of God and participated in the prison ministry program. She cared deeply about her family and was dedicated to improving the quality of life of her children. Whether it was caring for various children (many of which are prominent members of the community and of Triedstone) or cooking a hot meal for those who wanted it, she was committed to helping others in any way she could. Carmen had a wide range of hobbies, including gardening, cooking, choir (she was active in the Angelic Christian Voices), and church activities. She also enjoyed traveling and visited friends and family in Trinidad and Florida often. She was cared for by many and will be lovingly remembered for her kindness, her witty sense of humor, her passion for gardening, and her unique sense of style. She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon Walker, and her son Gregory. She is survived by her children: Dennis, Ingrid, Bernadette, Oswald, Selwyn, Sharon, Karen, and her stepchildren Linus, Crispin, Wayne, Evelyn, and Gemma. She had 32 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She passed peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family and closest friends.
