A devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he embodied godly attributes in every aspect of his life. He didn’t simply speak of his values—he lived them, daily demonstrating his faith through his actions and the songs he loved to sing. Our family is honored to share with you a glimpse of the extraordinary man he was, and the many ways he worked tirelessly to serve others, often without fanfare.

A Preacher’s Son and Early Family Life

Born to Rev. Frank C. Cleveland, Sr., and Minnie B. Cleveland, Frank grew up immersed in faith, service, and music. As a preacher’s kid (P.K.), he developed a deep understanding of ministry and community from an early age. His parents’ devotion to God and their congregation laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to serving others. Frank’s early involvement in the church began at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, where he was invited to join the adult choir at just 14 years old by the renowned musician Eleanor DeLoache. His leadership also extended beyond the church walls, as he introduced famed baseball legend Jackie Robinson at a YMCA youth event and excelled in school as a leader and performer. These formative experiences, shaped by his family and faith, would guide him throughout his life.

Professional and Community Involvement

Frank’s commitment to improving the lives of others was evident through his many roles:

• Director of Housing at the Columbus Urban League.
• First Director of Model Cities for Columbus, where he pioneered programs such as the first summer meal program for children and summer jobs for teens.
• Social Worker at Neighborhood House and TrayLee Center.
• National Representative to Washington, D.C. under Ralph Nader during President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration.
• CW4 Army Bandmaster Commander of the 338th Army Band at Fort Hayes, the first African American Bandmaster in the area. He led the band in parades, concerts, and Army ceremonies across several states.
• G.E.D. Instructor for Columbus City Schools, teaching at various locations including schools, libraries, and churches, and pioneering high school G.E.D. computer classes.

His numerous awards in the military and civilian sectors speak to his dedication and the profound impact he had on those he served.

A Ministry Through Music

Music was Frank’s passion and a powerful avenue for his ministry. Over the decades, he directed and participated in numerous choirs, sharing his gift to inspire and uplift:

• Director of the Paul Laurence Dunbar African American Concert Choir for over 30 years, performing at churches and events throughout Ohio.
• Leader of combined choirs for annual Good Friday performances of The Seven Last Words of Christ.
• Minister of Music at Mt. Vernon A.M.E. Church and choir director at Shiloh Baptist Church.
• Tenor soloist for significant events, including Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations and performances of The Seven Last Words of Christ in Ohio and Michigan.
• Member of the Chapel Choir and Men’s Glee Club at Capital University, where he is honored annually at alumni events.

Frank was also a devoted mentor to young musicians, taking pride in nurturing the next generation. He had the joy of seeing his son, Frank III, carry on his legacy as a gifted musician and arranger, working with choirs led by Frank’s own mentor, Dr. Raymond Wise.

Leadership from a Young Age

Frank’s leadership abilities were evident early in life. At just 14 years old, he was invited to join the adult choir at St. Paul A.M.E. Church. He introduced Jackie Robinson at a youth event and excelled in high school as a debate team leader, musical performer, halftime show announcer, and class president.

A Devoted Family Man

As a father, Frank encouraged his children to explore their unique interests while grounding their lives in faith. His dedication to God and family inspired each of his children to become ambassadors for Christ, continuing his legacy of service and devotion.

I am Frank C. Cleveland, Jr., a native of Columbus, Ohio. I was educated in the Columbus City Schools system and was very active in music during my youth. While in junior high school, I enjoyed singing in an adult choir called the National Association of Negro Musicians Choir.
