Genevieve Hymes

Genevieve (Robinson) Hymes of Columbus, Ohio passed away peacefully and went to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 88 on August 20, 2022. She was born on October 15, 1933 to the late Willie and Geneva Robinson in Newellton, Louisiana.

Genevieve was a mother like no other. She was intelligent, strong, loving, and always thrived at whatever mission she needed to accomplish. Practically singlehandedly, she worked hard to lovingly raise her six children to achieve all that life had to offer. She conquered every hurdle she faced, and there were plenty, with strength, wisdom, and dignity to ensure her children could achieve all that life had to offer. Genevieve’s steadfast dedication to her children’s wellbeing did not go unnoticed—she achieved the status of mother of the year in the city of Columbus. She was adamant about education; three of her children earned academic scholarships to attend a private boarding school in upstate New York. Her children hold college degrees from bachelor’s to PhD from an array of universities including the University of Cincinnati, Ohio State University, Tufts University, Harvard University, Yale University and Bowdoin College. Anyone who was fortunate enough to know her, knew that everything she conquered in life she did to pave a path for her offspring to thrive and to get the best that life has to offer. She was unstoppable, a force to be reckoned with—our hero, our shining star. She leaves behind nothing but loving memories. We love you momma.

Genevieve built a beautiful legacy in Columbus, Ohio. To cherish her precious memory is a host of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is survived by six children: Phillip Hymes of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, Cynthia (Hymes) Bell of Boston, Massachusetts, Janet (Jeffrey) Storey, Jacqueline Hymes, Barbara (Raymond) Michael, of Columbus, Ohio, and Lisa Hymes of Los Angeles, California. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Autumn Hymes, Noah and Christiana Bell, Omari Warren, Tia Hymes, Brenda McCoy, Timara Wyche, Ciara Michael and Phillip (AJ) Lee. Genevieve was also blessed with 17 precious great-grandchildren: Dora and Mariah Hymes, Samai Bell, Levi, Tristan, and Camilla Warren, Dionte and Aliyah Dunbar, Mason Burger, Jamaal Calhoun, Jr., Royal Daniels, Steven Belcher, Jr., Camille Pope, Major Lockhart, Trevoin Traylor and Logan Rutledge.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Geneva Robinson; several siblings, Reverend Gather Robinson, Reverend Cather Robinson, Victoria Slaughter, Elijah Robinson, Inez Hill, Cornelius Robinson, Elease Branch, Blondell Cross, Hesikiah Robinson, and Steven Robinson; and her granddaughter Ciara Lee and great grandson Santino Warren,
