George Richard Broadnax

George Richard Broadnax, age71, departed this life on July 11, 2016 at his residence. He was born May 20, 1945.    He was preceded in death by his parents Lizzie and Jerry Broadnax; sister, Jane “Jinx” S. Broadnax Conway; brothers Arthur Broadnax and Willie Joe Broadnax.   George attended Columbus Public Schools and graduated in 1964 from the Historical Central High School.  While at Central he played football, basketball and ran track.  But he was best noted for his football skills and played on the citywide winning championship team for two consecutive years. He attended Central State University where he majored in physical education and was a member of the Marauder football team.  On May 7, 1978, George was baptized at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, under the leadership of Dr. Charles E. Booth.  He was a member of the Male Chorus, and served on the Board of the Mt. Olivet Federal Credit Union.  He worked for the City of Columbus for a short time, the Croson Plumbing Company and later retired from T. P. Mechanical Contractors.   He loved to cook and for several years he participated in the Friends of Art for Community Enrichment (F.A.C.E.) Celebrity Chefs. George was a person of many talents and interests, some of which included art work and gardening.  He loved building things, which included planning and constructing a beautiful addition to their home and building a water feature in their garden.  He was also known as a “Chili Head” because he competed in chili cooking competitions throughout the United States.  He loved attending Jazz Jam sessions at the Marble Gang, Mamie Moore, and Easton Town Center.   George leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Donna Estelle Broadnax; two daughters, Gina (Ortiz Calderon) Broadnax and Estelle Broadnax Armbrester; three grandchildren, Hugh Coles Broadnax, Taylor Broadnax and Stevie Armbrester, Jr.; three great-grandchildren, TyShawn Berry, Gi’Niyah Lynch and Kahlil Broadnax; two brothers Roy (Kathy) Broadnax, Glen “Curt” Broadnax;  sisters-in-law Linda Broadnax and Mary (Henry) Robinson of Franklin, OH, and a host of other family members and friends.

The Service of Memory will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 428 E. Main Street, Columbus, OH.   The family will receive friends at 12 noon for the visitation period and the Service of Memory will begin at 1:00 pm.   Dr. Charles E. Booth officiating.
