Georgia M. Collins

GEORGIA MAY (DOUGLAS) COLLINS was born on February 7, 1934 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late John Douglas, Sr. and Augustine (Grissom) Douglas.

She graduated from Douglass High School in Lexington, Kentucky. After high school, she enrolled in Kentucky State University, Frankfort, Kentucky, where she earned her Bachelor degree in sociology and economics. Her first teaching job was at Rosenwald High School in Harlan, Kentucky. With a desire to grow her career even more, she accepted an offer with Columbus City Schools where she taught from 1965 until her retirement in 2000.

Georgia taught at Dana Elementary, Cassady Elementary, Mifflin Junior High, and Johnson Park Middle Schools. She was devoted to educating children and often tutored children after school. At her church, she volunteered to tutor high school students for the proficiency test for which many youths and parents were grateful. She often tried to encourage young people to stay in college verbally and with monetary gifts. She had a passion for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

It would be any child’s dream to have such a loving mother as Georgia. She was always willing to give over and beyond her love and resources to her two sons, John and Stephan. When grandchildren came into her life, they gave her unspeakable joy. Once again, she always extended her resources to the grandchildren. She expressed to her grandchildren that she would not be around for their college graduations, but she was sure they would be successful.

Georgia was married to John Rodman Collins, who remained by her side until death.
She loved preparing fish on Fridays and Sunday dinner for her family and friends. All were welcome to come and dine. Georgia enjoyed spending holidays with her extended family. She had a flair for fashion and was always stylish and colorful.

Georgia began her Christian walk at the Greater Liberty Temple Church of God in Christ. She later transferred her membership to New Covenant Believers’ Church, under the pastorate of Bishop Howard Tillman, where she remained a loyal member until her health failed.

She will be remembered for her dedication to educating young people, her smile and her red hair.
On January 23, 2020, Georgia transitioned from earth to Glory with her family by her bedside.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Augustine Douglas; grandsons, Michael Palm and Tim Owsley; sister, Alberta Allen; and brother-in-law, Courtney Allen.

Precious memories of Georgia will be forever cherished by her loving husband, John Collins; sons, John (Cathey) Douglas of Lexington, Kentucky and Stephan (Regina) Douglas of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, John (Mary) Douglas of Lexington, Kentucky; and other relatives, extended family, and friends.

Visitation 9:00 AM and Funeral Service 10:00 AM Saturday, February 1, 2020 at New Covenant Believers’ Church, 3400 Kohr Blvd.

Interment at Evergreen Burial Park.
