Harry L. “Sonny” Hawkins

Harry L. Hawkins, affectionately known as “Sonny,” departed this life and entered into heaven’s gates on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at the age of 76 years old. Harry Lee Hawkins was born on January 24, 1946, in Columbus, Ohio, to Samuel L. and Catherine Hawkins. He was raised in Columbus along with his siblings and received his early education through the Columbus Public School System. After high school, he became employed at the Timken Roller Bearing Company, where he worked until his retirement after 36 years and 2 months of service.

On June 30, 1987, Harry married his sweetheart, Brenda M. Henry. Not only did she accept his hand in marriage, but she also loved and embraced his five children as her own. Harry loved his family and thoroughly enjoyed being around them. He was the president of the Lipsey-Hawkins Family Reunion. For many years he would attend Powerhouse of Hope were his nephew, Rev. Melvin Hawkins, was pastor.

Anyone who knew Harry also knew he loved to entertain! And those in attendance were sure to eat well and have a good time! Harry also enjoyed bowling, playing pool, a good game of cards and was always up to the challenge for a game of chess. Harry enjoyed riding his motorcycle and was a member of The Flames Motorcycle Club. He also loved to travel and enjoyed riding in his beloved Corvette. Harry was greatly loved & admired. He will truly be missed.

Harry L. Hawkins is preceded in death by his parents; son, David Alexander; brother, John Milton Hawkins; sister Dorothy Williams; brothers-in-law Anthony Lawrence and Joe Henry. He leaves to cherish his memory, loving and devoted wife of 35 years, Brenda; children, Kimberley (Al) Sallee, Harry (Deborah) Hawkins, Juan Haygood, Tina Shuler; sisters, Sandra Hawkins, Inez Lawrence & Mary Vallejo; brother, Robert Hawkins; grandchildren, Harelle Stith, AJ Sallee, III, Annastasia (EJ) Hutchins, Ausha Sallee, Jazzjuan Moore, Juanare Haygood, Tiandra (Quentin) Jefferson, Tiffany (Derrick) Smith, & Taleah Shuler; several great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
