Hester Harper

Deaconess Hester Harper, was born on December 30, 1936 in Bethel, Kentucky, to the union of James E. Harper and Mary Anna (Triplett) Harper. Hester completed her early education, K- 10 at DuBois City Schools in Mt. Sterling Kentucky. It was also in Mt. Sterling that she gave her life to Christ and was baptized at Kee Tabernacle CME.

 Leaving Kentucky in 1952 along with her family, she moved to Columbus Ohio. In Columbus, she attended Columbus East High School. After which, she went to “IBM Key Punch school” and started her career in the Insurance industry at Blue Cross Blue Shield. She retired from her career in Insurance as a Manager at Farmers Insurance in 1999. Her professional life was characterized by the dedication and excellence, mirroring the commitment she showed in every aspect of her life.

Hester met and married Clarence Rash in 1953 and to this union 2 children were born, Vincent McNair and Pamela Louise.

In the late 1960’s Hester united with Mt. Period Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. James Carter. Over the decades, she faithfully served under three pastors at Mt. Period. Rev James Carter, Rev Jerry M Carter Sr, and Rev. Ronald E. Elmore. At Mt. Period Hester was involved and appointed to various ministries within the church. The Music Ministry (The Angelic Voices, where she was the lead soloist on her signature song, “There’s a bright side somewhere”), Evangelism Outreach, Youth Ministry, Love committee, Sick Visitation, Missionary Ministry, Pastors Appreciation, Superintendent of the Sunday School, Director of Christian Education and the Deaconess Board. She also served as a Trustee and Financial Secretary. One little funny regarding her being a trustee is that she, on one occasion forgot to pay the church electric bill and so….. Mt Period was dark that Sunday. However, that little fumble did not stop the love and appreciation that Mt. Period felt for her because, in 1987 the church built and named a Library in her honor.

Hester LOVED her family. She was at every family event that was held. Weddings, Funerals, Family Reunions and plain ole fashion family get togethers. She, with her radiant and big smile always lightened the room. She will forever be remembered for her unwavering faith, nurturing spirit, and profound impact on the lives of those she encountered.

On July 10, 2024, Hester was reunited with her parents James E. and Mary Anna Harper. Siblings; Leela Bell Dawson, Maggie Dave, Lora Fuller, Ella Ruth Harper, Rosa Savannah, Anna Florence Harper, Alfred Harper, James Harper, and Howard E. Harper.

Deaconess Hester Harper leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion for those who will miss her dearly. Son, Vincent McNair Rash Sr, Daughter, Pamela Louise Rash-Perry, Sister Luvolia Cook; Grandchildren, Michael (Keyana) Rash, Latika Rash, Mayo Rash, Clarence Rash, Latasha Rash, Vincent McNair (Marissa) Rash II, and Elisabeth Rash. A host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

On Monday, July 22, 2024, we will gather to honor Hester's life and legacy. Visitation will begin at 11 am, followed by the funeral service at 12 noon, held at Mt. Period Baptist Church, 462 Kimball Place. Interment will take place at Green Lawn Cemetery.
