Hilda M. Ramsey

Hilda M. Ramsey was born August 19, 1921 in Ashland, KY to Esther Franklin and Frank Ramsey. She always said she was born on August 17 th, but the doctor wrote the 19 th on her birth certificate. Her mother married William Young and they had 4 other children. William raised Hilda as his own and he was her father.

Hilda was married twice early in her life. Neither of these marriages produced any children. Even though she never had children of her own, she became a mother figure to her nieces and nephews. She was always there for major events in their lives such as High School and College Graduations, weddings, childbirths, etc. as well as offering guidance and advice when needed.

Hilda had a long and fulfilling life. She enjoyed traveling, music, socializing and being with friends and family. She didn’t drive but could get around Columbus better thana a lot of people. She was a great cook. Most people would brag about her Lemon Squares, 7 up Cake and German Chocolate Cakes. She was an avid sports fan, especially football and basketball. She would travel to Cleveland to see the Cleveland Brown’s play.

She was not an Oprah or Soap Opera watching kind of woman. She was also a person who said how she felt and wasn’t shy about speaking her mind. Hilda’s early career included being a beautician in Dayton, Ohio and working at Argo and Lehne Jewelry store in Columbus. She retired from The Ohio Department of Transportation where she worked as a Secretary/Receptionist Hilda gave her life to Christ and was baptized when she was a young girl in Ashland, KY. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class. She attended church until her health prevented her from going.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Elizabeth (Nita) Owens, Norma Johnson; brothers, William (Dunnie) Young, Richard (Dick) Young and nephews, Cornell Appling, Stephen Owens and Robert Young. She leaves to mourn, nieces, Diane (Owens) Ferguson, Teryl (Young) Simpson (David), Valerie Jennings all of Columbus, Ethel (Owens) Forbes of Cleveland, Teresa Owens of Atlanta, Anita (Appling) Miller (Rex) of Roseville California; nephews, Ted Johnson, (Joan) and Richard Simpson both of Columbus as well as many great nieces and nephews, great- great nieces and nephews along with a host of other family members and friends.
