John E. Bowie Sr.

April 21, 1965 — January 8, 2025

John Edward Bowie Sr., age 59, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on January 8, 2025. He was born on April 21, 1965, in Columbus to John Ecker Hatchett and Rachel Lee Bowie, who preceded him in death. John is also preceded in death by his sisters Ruby Jewel Toran, Tracy Renee Savannah, and Ashley Rene' Coles.

John was a devoted husband to his wife, Benita J. Bowie, and a proud father to his children: Brandi Meadows (Marc M), John Edward Bowie Jr., and Brandon Bowie (Senta). He also leaves behind a legacy of love through his siblings, Alicia Hatchett (Bernard), Stella Marshall (Terry), Dr. Deidre Tucker (Keith), Kareim Bowie, Lamont Goodwin, Monique Mkiramweni, and Darlene McCall, as well as a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and friends.

John was a proud graduate of Northland High School. He was formerly employed at AMCOR and the co-owner of B&B Total Lawn Care Services. Known for his strong work ethic, dedication, and community awareness, he made a lasting impact through his family business and willingness to speak up about injustices and the political issues that affected his family and community.

John was an exceptional orator, able to captivate a room with his words. Whether sharing a story or giving a life lesson, his voice commanded attention. He spoke passionately and left a lasting impression on everyone around him. His boisterous laugh, quick wit, and warmth made him a beloved figure. He could always be counted on to bring about togetherness at any family gathering.

John was a "man's man," and one of many talents, who enjoyed working on cars, fishing, and cooking-hobbies that highlighted his hands-on approach to life. Whether under the hood of a car, casting a line into a river, or cooking a meal for his loved ones, John did it with a sense of purpose and pride.

John's impeccable style and dress were another hallmark of his personality. He was always sharp, well-groomed, and polished, and it was not uncommon for someone to remark that he was "cleaner than the Board of Health." His appearance matched his attention to detail-he was always neat, always prepared, and always made people feel at ease and loved.
