John Hairston

John Thomas Hairston, 74, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. John, one of 13 children, was born into a family full of energy and warmth on August 30, 1950, in Maybeury, West Virginia, to Robert Lee and Virginia Hairston.


After graduating from Park Central High School in 1970, he briefly attended Bluefield State College. John and his wife at the time, June Dodson, relocated to Columbus, Ohio. Later embarking on a life defined by hard work and dedication.


John worked tirelessly in a variety of jobs before finding his calling in law enforcement. He worked at Columbus Oxygen Company, delivering medical oxygen supplies across Ohio, and at Lazarus Bakery on the third shift, often juggling multiple jobs to provide for his family. His work ethic eventually led him to join the Columbus Division of Police, where he graduated from the academy on December 7, 1980.


During his 33-year career with the Columbus Division of Police, Officer Hairston served with distinction. He began on third-shift patrol, later joined the Burglary Unit, and eventually transitioned to the Court Liaison Narcotics Unit, where he served for over 25 years. John was also the coordinator for the special duty program with Kroger, earning a reputation for his reliability and commitment. Known for his kindness and dedication, John touched the lives of colleagues, community members, and friends alike.


While at the police department, John met the love of his life, Officer Jean Holmes. The two shared many happy years together, eventually marrying and raising his son, Brian Wilson.


In addition to his police career, John pursued his entrepreneurial spirit and passion for helping others by opening several businesses, including Main and Wilson Carryout and Old Town East Convenience Market. His businesses became community staples, reflecting his dedication to serving and uplifting those around him.


John is survived by his beloved wife, Jean Holmes Hairston; his son, Brian Wilson; his brothers Calvin, Lorenzo, Golden, and Jerome; and his sisters Ernestine, Edith, and Deborah. He also leaves behind a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and loved ones who cherished their Uncle John.


John was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee and Virginia Hairston; his stepson, Marshall Stephney; his sisters, Ozella, Janet, and Clarice; and his brothers, Ervin, Odell, and George; and loving mother-in-law, Mary Crockett.


John's life was a testament to hard work, love, and service. His kindness, integrity, and dedication to his family and community will forever be remembered.
