Johnnie Banks

July 10, 1943 — December 16, 2024

Johnnie Lee Banks was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 16, 2024. He was born on July 10, 1943, to AB and OD Banks on Wolfe Lake Plantation in Yazoo City, Mississippi, as the 11th of 22 children. He was preceded in death by 18 of his siblings, his wife Catherine Banks (Broomfield), his daughter Youmeakia Banks, his grandson Jayreese Myshon Banks, and his great-grandson Jiimar D'Angelo Jenkins.

In 1967, Johnnie married Catherine Broomfield in Columbus, Ohio. Together, they built a family and raised four children. Their relationship had its ups and downs, but their shared commitment to their family remained a constant.

Johnnieis survived by his children: Linda (Manuel) James of Southaven, MS; Johnny (Deanna) Banks, Yolanda (Robert) Banks-Shaw, Ashlie Banks, Angel Manns, and Nieja Wayns, all of Columbus, OH. He is also survived by his sister Verlene Warren of Victorville, CA; his brother Connie L. Byrd of Columbus, OH; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.

Johnnie's life was defined by resilience and hard work. A dedicated brick mason, he took pride in pointing out the buildings he had helped construct across Columbus. Known for his sharp wit and humor, Johnnie could make anyone laugh-whether he meant to or not. He loved to dress sharp, often completing his look with one of his signature hats.

Johnnie "PeiPaw" Banks will be remembered by his remaining siblings, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many others whose lives he touched.

Rest in peace, Johnnie
