Johnnie B Davis, 79, of Mansfield, Ohio, peacefully passed away December 24, 2024, at the Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by family after an extended illness.
He was born on February 4, 1945, in Rich, Mississippi, to the late Bennie and Walter Lee Davis. As a young child, he moved to Mansfield, where he was affectionately known as “Johnnie B” by everyone who knew him. After graduating from Mansfield Senior High School in 1963, he went on to dedicate 35 years of service to AK Steel before retiring in 1999. In addition to his career at AK Steel, Johnnie B earned his real estate license and also provided tax preparation services.
A historic moment in Johnnie B’s life was becoming the first known African American to earn a pilot’s license in Mansfield, Ohio.
Johnnie B was an avid fisherman. You could find him most summers at his Lake House, fishing or having BBQ'S for friends and family. When it came to sports, he took great pride in following his Grandkids football and basketball careers, cheering them on from high school through college with unwavering support.
He was a devoted football fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns. He loved rewatching Buckeyes football games and often insisted that others join him, sharing his enthusiasm. For Cleveland Browns games, Sundays were a special tradition filled with football parties hosted by friends and family. They proudly called themselves "The FCSB&O" (Friends, Cousins, Sisters, Brothers & Others). Celebrating the camaraderie and excitement of the game together.
Johnnie B leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his 3 children, Eric Johnson, Daphne (John) White, and Janine (Jason) Shelley; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. His 3 siblings, Lillie Taylor, Floyd (Sylvia) Davis, Brenda (David) Williams. His former wife and life long friend, Anita Davis. His friend Rita Cochran and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Darlene Fuller-Pritchard, 4 sisters, Verlene Davis, Mary Nettles, Minnie Churn and Emma Davis. 4 brothers, Roy, Benny, Freddie and James.
