Margie Maxine Johnson

Margie Johnson was born on June 1, 1922, in Springfield, OH to Milton and Mamie Johnson. To this union, two children were born: Mary and Margie Johnson. Margie graduated from Springfield High School in 1940 and was initiated into the National Honor Society during the 1937-1938 school period, only the second black student in her hometown to achieve this.

Not long after graduating high school, Margie married the love of her life, Elwood Johnson. On March 18, 1941, they exchanged their vows and proceeded to enjoy 47 years of service, travel, and fun together.

After being married 15 years, their beloved daughter Ellen Johnson completed the family. In 1989, the same year she lost her husband, she was blessed with the birth of her only grandchild, Taylor DelosSantos. Margie never missed any milestone in Ellen or Taylor’s life, including the birth of her great- grandchild Mozaic in 2021. She was 99 years old.

As a child, Margie was a member of North St. A.M.E Church, but after marriage transferred her membership to Wiley United Methodist Church where she served in multiple roles including church secretary, choir, and usher board. In 1974, she received the Holy Ghost, and became a member of the El Bethel Temple. After Elwood’s death, she became a member of The Church of Jesus where she remained
for the rest of her life and served in many roles.

Margie was a charter member of the Alpha Nu Chapter of Gamma Phi Delta sorority and served over 12 years as the Assistant Northern Regional Director. She was also a charter member of The Frontiers Auxiliary, a member of NARFE (The National Association of Retired Federal Employees), The Retirement Set, and the NAACP. Margie was a businesswoman who, in her early 20’s, operated a lady’s
dress shop, and over the years was involved in several direct marketing companies. She retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base after 25 years as an Executive Secretary and was coaxed out of retirement by the Springfield City Manager’s Office, Springfield City Schools, and Springfield OIC utilizing her exemplary secretarial skills in each of these positions.

Margie fell asleep and awoke in paradise reunited with her loved ones on October 22, 2022, at the ripe age of 100 years old. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Mary Ross, her husband, Elwood, and numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

She is survived and missed by her daughter, Ellen, granddaughter Taylor, and great-grandson Mozaic DelosSantos, beloved nieces Margie Carr of Atlanta, GA and Mary (Mickey) Hawkins of Indianapolis, IN and multiple great-nieces, great-nephews, family and friends, who will honor her memory.
