Marilyn R. Guice

Marilyn R. Guice was born to Carl and Suzette Beatty on June 6, 1946 in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The youngest of three, Marilyn was a spirited, fun-loving, and kind woman. She was everyone’s favorite auntie, related or not. After moving to Columbus to be nearer to her older sisters Gloria and Marcella, Marilyn worked for a while at a bank where she met Alphonso Guice, Sr., her husband of 54 years. Both Marilyn and Alphonso loved to tell the story of their meeting and we all loved to hear it. Alphonso credits her big sister Marcella as the one who finally got him the greenlight to begin courting Marilyn. Marilyn enjoyed the house they shared on Champion Avenue where she lovingly tended her garden, flowers and hosted family gatherings. She loved to hear Alphonso sing and would beam with pride whenever he sang at family functions or as a choir member at church.

Marilyn retired after 34 years of service at Grant Hospital where she was known and recognized as a smiling and comforting presence to thousands of families in their time of need. There she met and took Stephanie Dunning under her wing, caring for and looking after her like a daughter until Stephanie’s passing. You can still find Stephanie’s smiling face framed and sitting in the living room of the Guice home.

Marilyn loved her family and all those whom she embraced like family. An encouraging soul, Marilyn was always full of words of comfort and cheer. She never hesitated to tell her loved ones how smart they were or how proud she was of them and applauded every effort and milestone. She loved to write letters and send cards written in her lovely penmanship and because she loved bunnies- they often appeared too!

Marilyn attended church at First Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio where she loved to fellowship and made friends with members who were kind enough to look after she and Alphonso during the pandemic.

Marilyn had a twinkle in her eye and a laugh that brought tears to her eyes. She was truly a joy in this life and her presence will be missed.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents Carl Beatty and Suzette Beatty, her sister Gloria Cundiff, aunt and uncle John and Dora Payne, uncle Robert Redman and nephew Eric Jordan.

Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, Alphonso Guice, Sr., son Bishop Alphonso Guice, Jr. (Katie), sister Marcella Dickerson, granddaughter Mecah C.
