Mary Elizabeth Mizelle

Mary Elizabeth Mizelle, age 99, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 13th in the comfort of her own home with family. She was born December 22, 1919 in Charleston, West Virgina to Thomas Redd and Earcel Scott. November 10th, 1940, she married her one and only love, Melvin Mizelle, who preceded her in death on May 29th, 1998.

Mary, known as Mae to many and Gibbie to her family, loved people. She was compassionate and giving to everyone. She believed that there was good in all people, young or old and stood up for those she felt could not stand up for themselves. Most importantly, she loved her family fiercely and passionately and never hesitated to talk about, brag about, or show pictures to whomever would listen. She was a lover of music, and the arts, and was undoubtedly one of the best cooks this world has ever seen. She loved antiques, and enjoyed shopping, traveling and just talking to people.

Mary worked 36 years at the Columbus School for Girls in their Kitchen and was their head cook for many, many years. She devoted her days to keeping 600 girls and nearly 100 faculty and staff fed and was always happy to see her granddaughter Holly who attended.

As demonstrated by her favorite Bible verse (Psalm 23)“…surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”, her life was governed by faith and service to the Lord. She was a loyal, working member of St Philip Luthran Church for over 67 years. She sang in the choir and served on many committees over the years.

Mary is survived by her sister Staralee Robbins; two daughters, Adreanne J. Walker, Joanne (Michael) Jennings, one son, Spencer (Elaine) Mizelle: five grandchildren Brent, Renee (William), Craig (Amber) Jeannine (Mike), and Holly (Derrick); ten great grandchildren; Clifford, Chantel, Cree, Aramis, Brandon, Raquel, Adrianna, Dominic, Hannah, and Zane; four great great grandchildren; Carma, Amya, Iyana, Indya. All of these she loved and touched deeply.
