Michael Anderson Ervin (82) was born in Columbus, Ohio on October 27, 1932 and departed from this earthly realm of life on March 7, 2015. Michael is preceded in death by his parents Jarrett and Sarah Ervin, his beloved wife Lela Mae Ervin, and previous wife Lucille Peaks, brothers James C. Ervin and Jerry Ervin, sons Michael Ervin Jr., Robert Murphy, Ronald Ervin, Lee Ervin and daughter Sheila Gordon.
Michael was employed at The Ohio State University in the Department of Residence and Dining Halls as a custodial worker from April 16, 1979 until his retirement on October 30, 1994. Among his many attributes, Michael possessed an unwavering sense to challenge injustices he saw in the workplace; Michael joined his brother the late James C. Ervin in establishing a labor union for service and maintenance workers at OSU; ASCME now Local 4501, Communications Workers of America. An advocate of higher education Michael (a world historian in his own right) was among the first of those instrumental in the conception of the Reach One Program at OSU (an adult education program for employees seeking to attain a GED.)
Michael Anderson Ervin leaves to cherish his memory, his daughters Rosa L. Denson, Victoria Hairston, Sheila (Joseph) Collins, sons Jarrett Ervin, Ike Ervin, and James M. Ervin, his only living brother Lee Ervin and a host of grand-children, great grand-children and extended family and friends.
