Mother Hattie M. Parrish

Hattie Mae Parrish was born in Williamson, West Virginia on November 25, 1936 to Joe & and Annie Mae Parrish. As a child she attended the School for the Deaf & Blind, where she excelled in music and crafts. She often explained that she did not know that she was blind until she was 10 years old, because her parents did not cottle her, or treat her in any special way.

Along with her parents and baby girl Deborah Lynn, she moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1957. In 1961, with 2 children and expecting another, she was in search of a church home, when a neighbor by the name of Willa Mae Tate invited her to visit Christ Memorial Baptist Church, where she joined and remained for 60 years. As a member of Christ Memorial Hattie served as a faithful member in many groups, including the Sanctuary Choir, The Golden Circle, Ruth Circle and the Mother Board. She was sometimes asked to play the piano during devotion if the musician was running late.

For 40 years Mother Parrish was a dedicated employee of the Vision Center Industries of Central Ohio, a warehouse that mainly employed individuals with physical or mental disabilities. As an assembler, Mother Parrish would piece together automobile parts for such companies as Volkswagen, Ford and Mercedes Benz. After becoming a warehouse manager, Mother Parrish would become the receptionist and office manager until her retirement in 2005.
