Obituary of
Edith M. Jones
On April 15, 2023, one of God’s angels ascended back to her heavenly home. Edith Marie Jones departed this earthly life at the age of 92. She was born in Sun, WV as the youngest of
nine children. She is predeceased by her parents Edgar Calvin and Ida Mildred Evans; son, Robert Evans; and her eight siblings; brothers, Louis, Lorenzo, Herman, and Norman; and sisters, Inease, Cleopatra, Lillie and Louise. Edith had a melodious voice and began singing at a young age. She sang as a soloist throughout Beckley and surrounding areas and with various singing groups including Pop Wiley and the WV Spiritual Singers, and the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Adult Choir. She was most notably a member of the Voices of Inspirations, an anointed group of friends who came together to share Christ through the gospel of song. Edith retired from the Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital after thirty years of service. A woman of strong faith, she was an active member of the Apostolic Lighthouse Deliverance Temple, in Beckley, WV under the pastorate of the Late Apostle David Daniels, Jr., where she served as a Trustee and Deaconess. She devoted her time and energy to serve in the house of God. It was there that she used her gift as a meticulous seamstress to create beautifully crafted handkerchiefs to raise funds to honor her best friend and ALDT First Lady, the late Bishop Lois Jean Daniels. Edith always dressed stylishly, was quick witted, feisty and loved her children. She may have been 5’3” but she was a towering force to be reckoned with. She once used the phrase, “I’ll kill a rock over mine”, which is the best way to convey her fierce love and devotion to those she held dearly. Her children were her greatest joy and she had a special bond with her daughter Doll, who was her favorite (Bill thinks he was).
She enjoyed sitting around the table harmonizing and singing gospel songs with the family, teaching silly songs to the grandkids and laughing at the many antics that her large and loving family came up with. In 2007, Edith began experiencing memory loss, poor judgment, and confusion. She was eventually diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). The disease progressed over the following 15 years. Her worsening symptoms resulted in her moving from her beloved home in Beckley, WV to reside with her daughter and family in Columbus, OH. In December 2020, she was admitted into Hospice and received long term care at Eastland Care Center. Edith is survived by her children: son, William (Bettyanne) Hammond of Rapid City, SD, and daughter, M. Darlene (Darrell) Carson of Columbus, OH; grandchildren Janine (Robert) Colvin, Angela Ward, Daryia Carson, Tiffany (Ethan) Hammond, Robert (Jennifer) Hammond, Brandon (Mirella) Hammond, Felicia Carson-Lang, Melinda Carson, and Gerrard (Dionne) Carson; great grandchildren, Crisstina Hammond, Milaan Colvin, Deitra Colvin, Lennox Christian, Sadie Hammond, Malachi Hammond, Camryn Carson, Alencia Lang, Noah Lang, Mariah Schneider, Danielle and Devin Carson; and great grandchildren, Londyn, Damari and Genesis.
Edith loved her home in Beckley, WV, and only left due to her memory loss. For this reason, the family made sure to honor her in the place where she loved and had many cherished memories. We take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace and reunited with her beloved memories.
