Mrs Mary Elizabeth Smith

Mary Elizabeth Smith, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, passed away on January 19, 2024, at the age of 78. She was born on August 4, 1945, in Charleston, West Virginia to Otis and Fannie Mae Byers.

In her early years, Mary moved from West Virginia to Columbus, Ohio where she connected with Robert Lee Smith, Sr. Forming a close-knit family, together they raised two daughters, Ivy, and Amelia; and one son, Robert Jr. Family was always the light of Mary’s life. She cherished her role as a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Throughout her life, Mary actively contributed to her community. She diligently worked at Glick Furniture Store, Kelly Services, and Grant Hospital before retirement. Eager to volunteer her time and talents, Mary assisted Boy Scouts Troop 516, tutored elementary school students, supported Habitat for Humanity builds, and directed the children’s choir at New Zion Baptist Church. Seeking a new church where she could continue giving back, Mary felt an instant connection when visiting New Mount Sinai Church of God in Christ. Inspired by the pastor’s message of faith in action, and impressed by the congregation’s many community initiatives, she enthusiastically joined the church.

In her free time, Mary pursued her passions for art, sewing, and singing. She had a deep-rooted creative spirit that she shared generously. Mary was known for her warm smile that lit up any room and her caring nature that brought joy to others. She spread beauty through her talents and loving spirit. Although no longer with us, Mary’s brightness touches fond memories, and her kindness and smile will be missed but not forgotten.

She is survived by her three loving children, Robert Smith (Madonna Robinson), Ivy Smith, and Amelia Smith; six precious grandchildren, Norma Smith, Anthiese Smith, Marshaun Smith, Creme McClarty, Marlisha Gilmore, and Samuel Toles; one cherished great-grandchild, Zachary Gilmore, “JaZee her loyal companion”; and a multitude of caring family and friends who loved her dearly. A memorial service in her honor will be held on Monday, January 29, 2024, at New Mount Sinai Church of God in Christ.
