Nathan Lyle Long departed this life peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at St. Anns Hospital after battling several illnesses. He was born on March 20, 1948 in Charleston, WV. Nathan was preceded in death by his parents, Sterling and Blanch Long; brothers, Robert Jackson, James Jackson, and Sterling Long, along with sister Jackie Long and daughter Leetta Long.
Nathan was educated in Kanawha County Schools where he was a star student. He received a VA Awards Certificate of Achievement for completing the Eastern Blind Rehabilitation Service program.
At the age of 17 Nathan persuaded his mother to allow him to enlist in the United States Marine Corp. During the Vietnam War, he went to help a fellow injured Marine, when a mine went off and cost him his sight, as well as several fingers and other injuries. Nathan earned a Purple Heart for his service and bravery. He was honorably discharged in August 1969.
Those physical ailments prevented Nathan from working secular jobs, however he was still able to work hard at helping others, no matter what the tasks. Nathan was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Nathan had a magnetic and vibrant personality; he never met a stranger. Anyone that knew him could tell you he was the “life of the party.” Nathan would always find a funny story to tell that would have everyone laughing to tears. He had a love of music and would break out in song at any given moment. He enjoyed singing in local bands and with various artist in his younger years. Nathan was known to be a meticulous dresser, “a Dapper Dan”; even after losing his sight. He and his wife Jackie, made sure he was “dressed to impress.” Nathan enjoyed life and was good at whatever he put his mind to. He played football in high school and loved playing basketball. Boxing, college football, watching a good wrestling match, along with his favorite cowboy and western shows were some of the things he enjoyed doing with his friends and family. Bid whist was a favorite pastime and to hear him tell it; He was the Master!
Nathan met the love of his life, Jackie aka “Sugar” in 2010 and after a short courtship Nathan and Jackie were married on December 24, 2010, in an intimate ceremony. Nathan and Jackie enjoyed listening to the oldies and dancing around the house. They enjoyed traveling to various casinos throughout Ohio and West VA and cruising the Caribbean with family. On a nice day, you could find them sitting or napping on their front porch sharing a laugh and enjoying good conversation.
Nathan had a smile that would light up any room and a laugh that was contagious to all. Nathan often had an encouraging word, would offer a listening ear or a shoulder to lean on. Nathan was truly adored and loved very dearly. He will be greatly missed.
Nathan leaves to cherish his memory with his devoted and loving wife, Jacqueline (Jackie) Long; sons Nathan Long Jr. (Lisa) and Michael Long. Brother Paul Jackson (Loretta) Special niece Monica Cunningham, and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
