Nathaniel A. Angel

The last Rant of an Angry Black Man was written on Wednesday, April 29, 2020. Nathaniel A. Angel, blessed this world with 67 years of wit, humor and unapologetic Blackness.

Born on October 8, 1952 in Columbus, Ohio to Rosetta K. Angel and William Clark. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Taunda Angel. Nathaniel was a proud graduate of East High School Class of 1970. He attended the University of Notre Dame on an Academic Scholarship but walked on to the illustrious football team and played for two seasons. He was known for his WNDU radio show that was a celebration of Black music. Nathaniel married Vanessa Parker the day after graduating from Notre Dame with a Bachelors in Government. They raised two children together, Nathaniel II and Angela Angel in South Bend, Indiana where his knack for numbers landed him in banking at 1st Source. During his eighteen years there, he remained committed to bettering his community. Nathaniel led a team to finance the College Football Hall of Fame, helped provide financing for many minority businesses, was active in the Urban League, NAACP, and other civic organizations. He was a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Nathaniel returned to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio to work on the 2004 Presidential Election. He loved politics and climbed the ranks of the Ohio Democratic Party becoming the African American Caucus Director. He was heavily involved in the Columbus Civilian Community Board and Ohio Black Expo to name a few. Nathaniel spent his latter years traveling between Indiana and Ohio where he maintained strong community ties. He also lived part time in Prince George’s County Maryland, where he helped his daughter run for and win a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates. Nathaniel spent the final years of his life dedicated to uplifting and empowering the Black community. He truly embodied the belief “I am my brother’s keeper”.

Nathaniel is survived by his children Nathaniel Allen Angel II (Lakeshia C. Hall), Angela Monique Angel, his grandchildren; Antonia Q. Angel(25), Natrianna N. Angel(23), MasonMarie A. Humphrey (17), Nathaniel A. Angel III(16), Nazir A. Angel(15), Navar A. Angel(14), Kyrie S. Angel-Humphrey, KieShawn J. Sintrail(14), Darrius G. Jones-Humphrey II (12), Prince N. Angel(12), Josiah Jones-Humphrey (11), Nalin A. Angel(10), Yael Y.R. Humphrey (7), his brother Carlton (Jenette), Rhonda Robinson (friend), aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of family and friends.

A private visitation and memorial service will be held, Saturday, May 9, 2020 at Marlan J. Gary Funeral Home, The Chapel of Peace North at 1pm.
