Nellie Marie Carter

Nellie Marie (Gilbert) Carter was born August 17, 1929 in Manchester, KY to the late Floyd and Gracie (Mize) Gilbert.

She married her love, Andrew (Jack) Carter in 1954, who passed away prior to her death in 1994.

Nellie is preceded in death by her daughter Andrea Carter, brothers Eugene and Robert Gilbert, sisters Leona Birch and Gladys Owens, and grandsons Vincent Davis II and Andrew (A.J.) Davis.

Nellie and Jack moved to Columbus in 1955, and to their union was born 5 children; 1 son and 4 daughters. She is survived by son Marcus Carter and daughters Robin (Russell) Wilson, Toni Carter, and Leslie (Vincent) Davis and 2 inherited children, Jacqueline Lawrence and Nehemiah (Gwendolyn) Chambers. Also leaving to cherish her memories are 10 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, brother Jennings (Patricia) Gilbert, sister Jo Walker, special cousin Shirley Potter, and a host of cousins, nephews and nieces.

Nellie would often say “you can take the girl out the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl”. Her love of country music, horse racing, and watching “shoot em up” movies were all testament to this. She enjoyed traditional gospel music, collecting sewing thimbles, and perusing thrift stores. To her family, Nellie was an amateur song writer, word creator and storyteller.

Though she was small in stature, her heart was bigger than life. She was a giver and known as the neighborhood grandmother. She always made sure that everyone had what they needed, often taking extra food and supplies to neighbors in need.

Nellie will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her and experiencing her love. Hebrews 13:2 says, “be not forgetful to entertain strangers; for thereby some have entertained angels unawares”, and Nellie was definitely an angel. Just as she lived a life of peace, she passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 10, 2020.
