Ophinell Davis Sr.

Ophinell Davis Jr., born January 5, 1933 in Mansfield, Ohio to Ophinell Davis Sr. and Anna Lee Robinson. He passed away November 24, 2022 at The Waterford. He met and married Mildred Le Gardner on her nineteenth birthday on June 9, 1952 in Mansfield, Ohio. On that date he knew he would never get enough of this lady. Her love of Jesus and her Christian Faith know no bounds. She took this 18 year old boy under her loving wings in 1952 and over the years helped him become a man. Ophinell said the only times he cried during this time was when their son was murdered on April 30, 2010 and when, due to dementia, entered Mildred into a nursing home. Ophinell was a 1951 graduate of Mansfield Senior High and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He retired from Empire Detroit Steel Mill as a Security Chief. A lifetime member of the NAACP and over 60 year member of The YMCA. Hobbies include many historical displays of events in Mansfield that have been shown at Black History Month at the Mansfield Museum and Mansfield Library, Some are the “25 year History of Malabar High School (1964 – 1989)” The closing of “Creveling Grade School”, the history, of “Tyger Football” the “Steel Mill Workers” during the Second World War, The Veteran Military Service of Men & Women of All 20th Century Wars, The 100th Year History of our local YMCA. He was also a Multiple Gallon Blood Donor that started during his service during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and son; sisters in law, Willie Carpenter, and Sarah Hall and brother in law, Jessie Forsythe. Left to cherish his memory are grandchildren, Rochelle (Ronald) Flynn, Dexter Davis, Douglas (Cathy) Davis, Martell (Kate) King and Dewan Porter (Davis) and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Inurnment and Graveside service will take place at Mansfield Cemetery 12:00 noon Tuesday December 06, 2022.
