Pastor James A. Carter Jr.

Pastor James Alexander Carter Jr.

Loving Pastor of Lincoln Park Community Baptist Church

Pastor James A. Carter Jr. was born February 20, 1952 at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia. He is the eldest son of James A. and Mary A. Carter. When Pastor Carter Jr.  was 17 months old, his father and mother moved the family to Columbus, Ohio where he would work and serve for the greater portion of his life.

Pastor Carter Jr. was one of the few black youngsters of his day who was endowed with both athletic and academic abilities, which would establish the framework for his leadership style and temperance. Even as a child, he was keenly aware of his surroundings neighborhood and the plight of Black Americans. Influenced by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Pastor Carter Jr. spent much of his adolescent life in the literary discourse of these Black patriarchs.

Pastor James Carter Jr. attended Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky for two years and graduated from Trinity Theological Seminary in Indiana while working a full-time job at General Motors and serving in the pulpit under the leadership of the Reverend Dr. Andy Lewter at the Oakley Full Gospel Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio.

In February of 1994, Pastor James Carter Jr. went to work with his father, Pastor James Carter Sr. at Lincoln Park Community Baptist Church. On January 13, 2002 Pastor James Carter Jr. upon the retirement of his father became the Senior Pastor of Lincoln Park. In his 23 years of service to the Lincoln Park Community, Pastor Carter Jr. served the disenfranchised populous of the community drawing hundreds of people to Christ and the membership of the church.

If ever there was a godly leader, Pastor James A. Carter Jr. embodies such. His life has had a tremendous impact on the church and local community. He has led people from the street corner to the pulpit, through the hospital room and the courtroom. As one member so eloquently stated, “he was more than a pastor, he is a hero.”

Pastor James Carter Jr. is predeceased by paternal and maternal grandparents. Pastor James Carter Jr. is survived by his beautiful and devoted wife Dawn, his loving daughters Tamara Clark and Traci Maia Cox, and sons Jason and Joshua Cox. His father Pastor James A. Carter Sr. and his mother Mary A. Carter. His three brothers, Ronnie, Larry and Frank. His grandchildren Kaisen Clark and Chanel Cox. His son-in-law Alvin Lloyd, special family friend Anita Dawson and his beloved pet “Buster” as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, other family members and unforgettable friends.

His life as a son, brother, husband, father and friend speak volumes of his servanthood of life, his commitment to ministry and his call to the faith. He was truly a hero.
