Paul Edward Hoke

Paul Edward Hoke, affectionately known as “Big Sport,” was born on September 16, 1935, in Crestline, Ohio, to Robert and Mattie Hoke. His life was a testament to passion, dedication, and a deep love for sports and those in need.

Paul’s early years were shaped by his academic pursuits at Ohio State University before he answered the call to serve his country. He joined the Army and proudly served, receiving an honorable discharge in 1958. Paul’s sense of duty and loyalty was apparent in every aspect of his life.

A true sports enthusiast, Paul had a particular fondness for football and baseball. His enthusiasm for sports became a defining part of his character, earning him the endearing nickname “Big Sport.” He shared this love with countless others, inspiring a community of fans and athletes alike. After leaving the service, Paul settled in Mansfield, Ohio, where he began his career at General Motors. Additionally, he worked as a bus driver for New Hope, a job that brought him immense joy and fulfillment. Paul’s dedication to helping others, especially those with disabilities, was evident to all who knew him.

In his personal life, Paul found love and companionship with Mary (Durham) Hoke of Willard, Ohio, with whom he had five beloved children. Later in life, he found happiness once again and married Mamie Caldwell of Mansfield, Ohio, creating a strong and loving bond. Sadly, on July 23, 2023, Paul passed away after battling an extended illness. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Paul was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Mattie Hoke, his beloved wife Mamie (Caldwell) Hoke, his sister Choyce Mae Hoke, brother Ernest James Hoke, and great-grandson Anthony (Boobie) Jordan Jr. Additionally, he was preceded in death by his special cousin Katie Melton of Crestline, Ohio.

Paul leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion in his surviving family members. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Sharon Camak of Mansfield, OH, Paula (Robert) Windom of Mansfield, OH, Pam Russell of Castlebury, FL, and Renee (Joe) Hudson Avery of Deltona, FL. Also left to cherish his memory are his sons Stanley Hoke of Cleveland, OH, and Victor Hoke of Columbus, OH. The impact of his life extends to his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even a great-great-grandchild.

Paul (Big Sport) Edward Hoke will forever be missed and treasured in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of compassion, love, and passion for sports will continue to inspire and uplift generations to come. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Paul’s life and honor his memory. Details of the service will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Paul’s name to organizations supporting individuals with disabilities, a cause close to his heart.

Rest in peace, Big Sport. Your spirit will live on in the memories of all who loved you.
