Philip Randolph Hemphill Sr., age 61 of Columbus, Ohio passed away at Ohio State University Hospital East on December 14, 2017 at 7:44pm.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Phil was the 6th of 7 children born to Bob and Alma Lee Hemphill. He attended Linden McKinley High School where he was a standout in football, baseball and track. He played football for The Ohio State University under the legendary coach Woody Hayes and was a standout track star.
Phil provided for his family as a longstanding and respected union member while working for Yellow Freight for over 25 years.
Phil was a protector of family and friends. He was a loving husband and father who would help those in need; often giving advice to those who asked….and those he felt could use it! He was the “father” to many young fatherless men in the neighborhood and they looked to him for guidance and support.
No matter the season or time of day, you could find Phil outside working on a car repair. It could be 98 degrees, freezing cold or late at night, he would often spend hours helping others who could not afford pricey car repairs. He took pleasure offering his time and ensuring people had reliable transportation.
He was a kind, protective husband to his wife Paula. As a member of Trinity Baptist Church in his youth, his mother Alma Lee, and Deacon Bob would often pray that one day he would marry their family friend’s daughter Paula. They were destined to be together and through this union had Philip Randolph II and Paul Najee.
Philip Randolph Hemphill Sr. will be remembered as a protector, advisor and family-focused man. His children, three grandchildren Philip, Camaren and Christian, along with a host of nieces and nephews will keep his memory and legacy alive.
