Rebecca Thornton

August 18, 1965 — February 9, 2025

Columbus

Rebecca Thornton was born on Wednesday, August 18, 1965, to Samuel and Wilma (Means) Thornton in Queens, New York. Affectionately known as “Beck” and “Becky,” she spent her childhood and adolescent years in Queens before relocating with her parents, siblings, and extended family to Box Springs, Georgia, where she grew up.

After settling in the South, Rebecca completed her high school education, pursued cosmetology training, and developed a strong interest in fashion design. It was in Columbus, GA that she became a devoted mother to her four children—Princess, Prince, Pamella, and Patrick—whom she lovingly raised.

Seeking new beginnings, Rebecca moved to Columbus, Ohio in the mid-1990s to embark on a fresh chapter of her life, serving as the primary caretaker for her father, Samuel Thornton, as he battled illness.

With her new surroundings came a renewed walk of faith. Rebecca joined the Meredith Temple Church of God in Christ and enrolled in the Columbus State Real Estate program. While pursuing her studies, she became an active member of the church choir, a passionate youth advocate, and a creative spirit who expressed her love for fashion design in her leisure time. Her passion for style led her to work as a merchandiser at Marshall’s Co., but her desire to nurture young minds ultimately guided her to a role as a teacher’s aide at Linden Park Elementary School in Columbus, Ohio.

In 2004, Rebecca was unexpectedly diagnosed with Devic’s Disease, prompting her early retirement and the discontinuation of her real estate pursuits.

Despite facing a devastating diagnosis, Rebecca embraced her condition with determination that left a mark on everyone she encountered. She proved that even in the face of adversity, one can find purpose, joy and a way to keep serving others. Her faith in God was not merely something she spoke of but something she lived daily, embodying kindness, thoughtfulness, and a comforting presence that others found uplifting.

Whether it was through her encouraging words of “Keep on keeping on!” or her actions, Rebecca reminded people that persistence, faith, and love can carry you through even the most difficult times. Rebecca’s ability to place family, community, and faith at the center of her life inspired those around her to ground themselves in what matters most.

On Sunday, February 9, 2025, at the age of 59, Rebecca Thornton transitioned peacefully into the Lord’s embrace, surrounded by her loving family in Cincinnati, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Wilma (Means) Thornton; her brother, Samuel Mickerson; and her sisters, Patricia (Vernon) Roundtree, Luvenia (William) Bell, Pamella (Eddie) Hall, and Brenda (Marvin) Senter.

Rebecca leaves behind a legacy of love and faith through her children, Princess (Gabe) Davis, Prince Moody, Pamella Thornton, and Patrick Thornton; her beloved grandchildren, Serenity, Antonio, Elizabeth, Sophia, and Gianessa; her brothers, Jerry (Gale) Thornton and Mark Thornton; and a host of cousins, extended family, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
