ROBERT HENRY HESS
January 15, 1938 - November 6, 2024
Honoring our Beloved Robert Henry Hess, aged 86, who passed away on November 6, 2024 from an extended illness in Columbus, Ohio at the Kobacker House. Born on January 15, 1938, Robert grew up helping his grandparents farm in Brownsville, Tennessee, before moving to Shelby, Ohio, where he spent his formative years. During his time in Brownsville Tennessee, he attended the same church as Tina Turner, which fascinated us to say the least. Known for his succinct communication yet profound expressions, Robert possessed a keen sense of humor and a deep passion for education. His early experiences on the farm laid a strong foundation for his later achievements in both business and personal endeavors. Growing up during a time of racism and segregation in the south did not in any way steal his joy, charisma, gorgeous smile, and kindness toward anyone he encountered.
Robert's professional life was notably marked by a long tenure at General Motors/Fisher Body in Mansfield, Ohio where he worked many trades from 1958 until his retirement in 2006, but more notably as a Tool and Dye Worker. Alongside his brother, Earl Hess, he successful conquered the real estate market by owing several properties as well as land which showcased his business acumen. Adding to his accolades, he spent time giving service to the military as an Army Veteran from June 30, 1955 to June 29, 1963, further exemplifying his dedication and resilience.
Outside of work, Robert was an enthusiast of various activities including bowling, boxing, softball, dancing, and love for old school music, each of which reflected his vibrant and spirited nature. Speaking of nature, we have to include his free will and competitive character which assured that he would never be knocked down in any boxing match that he encountered.
Robert is survived by a loving family: his brother Earl Hess (Sylvia) of Ontario, Ohio; sons Bobby Hess of Buford, Georgia, and Robbie Hess of Westerville, Ohio; daughter Gilia "Gidget" Hess of Acworth, Georgia; grandson Vincent Durrell Hess Jr. of Mansfield, Ohio; and beautiful granddaughters Natajshia "Tae" Hess of Dublin, Ohio and Nori Hess of Acworth, Georgia as well as his great grandson Tariq Hess who he treasured. And to add to his list of survivors is his ex-wife Willa Mingle of Douglasville, Georgia, the mother of his granddaughters Senita Feagin of New Albany, Ohio who she loving refers to him as Pops, and a host of nieces and nephews! Robert leaves behind many great friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine and Joseph Hess; brothers Michael, John (Roberta), James, and Leo Hess; sisters Linda and Betty Hess; son Vincent Hess; ex-wife Bennie Moore Hess; great grandson Jamir Hess; beautiful as well as talented granddaughter Nykesia "Kesi" Hess known as #22 for years of basketball success, and adorable great grandson Grayson (Nykesia "Kesi" Hess son).
Our family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Kobacker House for their kindness, support, and care shown to our Hero Robert Hess. And to Cornerstone and their Caregiving team; Thank you for all that you do along with your endless commitment; and most of all for sending us Katie, the most Amazing Aide!
