Robert M. “Bo” Scott

Robert M. Scott was born on March 30, 1943, to James S. and Gladys M. Scott.  Bo, as his friends and family knew him was the 4th of five (Burnack, Wilbert, Roberta and Janet) children.  His twin sister Roberta being a few minutes older than him. They grew up in Connellsville Pennsylvania.

Sports played an integral role in Bo’s life. As a 3rd grader he followed his older brother to practice one day. The coach saw him watching from the sideline and asked his name.  Bo told him who he was and the coach handed him a uniform. That’s how he started playing football.

He played quarterback from booster football until his sophomore year. The new coach at Connellsville High School thought Bo would be more beneficial to the team if he played running back.  At first, he was hesitant, but soon realized there was nothing he could do about it.  As it turns out that was the best move. Bo was recruited by many colleges to play football, but ultimately chose to attend The Ohio State University.

Bo played with the Ohio State football team from 1961-63.  This is also when he met his first wife Mary Jane Mitchell.  They were wed November 16, 1964.  They added four children to their family during their marriage: Robin Marche’, Shawn Erik, Erron Nicole (Nikki) and Heather Michelle (Shelly).

On October 23, 1964, Bo signed with the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He Played in the CFL from 1964-1969. He was a standout running back being named to several All-Star teams.  In 1968 he helped the Roughriders win the Grey Cup Championship. In 1965 Bo was drafted by both the Cleveland Browns and the Raiders. He chose to play for the Browns where he had a stellar career for 6 seasons.  Bo Scott will forever be a part of NFL history as having scored the first rushing TD on Monday Night Football.

After his football career ended Bo returned to Ohio State to earn is BS in Social Work. He worked for The Franklin County Detention Center for 28 years. He retired as the Assistant Director.

Bo wed his loving wife Phyllis P. Bradley on February 13, 2012. Phyllis has 2 children Kevin and Toi.

He was active in his children and grandchildren’s lives. He also was an avid golfer and loved his Browns to the end. Bo was also a faithful and active member of the St. John AME church. As well as a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

This faithful husband, father and mentor won his crown in heaven on August 4, 2021. He is preceded in death by his mother Gladys Marilla Scott, father James Samuel Scott and sister Burnack Dowell. To mourn his passing are his loving wife Phyllis, his 4 children Robin, Shawn (Sharla), Nikki and Shelly; her children Kevin and Toi; his brother, Wilbert; sisters, Roberta and Janet; 15 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, relatives, friends and fans.
