It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Russell Junior Matherson, a beloved son, father, brother and friend. Russell “Russ” J. Matherson, age 55, was born January 15, 1969 in Biscoe, NC, but raised in Columbus, OH, passed away surrounded by family on January 25, 2024.

Russell was born to William Russell Matherson and Alma Lois Matherson, both of North Carolina. The family moved from Candor, NC in June 1976 when Russell was 7 years old. As such, Russell grew up in Columbus on the East Side. Russell graduated from Walnut Ridge High School where he lettered in football and track. Russell was an avid sports fan and loved the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Russell had a humble disposition and was willing to help whenever he could. Russell had a gentle soul and was generous in nature when circumstances would allow. Russell was not work averse and held several jobs over his lifetime. For the past several years, he was employed at Bob Evans.

Russell’s memory will forever remain etched in our hearts as we remember the impact he had on our lives.

Russell is preceded in death by his father, William Russell Matherson; grandparents, Luther and Letha McCaskill and Doris Matherson all of North Carolina.

Russell is survived by his mother, Alma Matherson; children, Terrence, Ty’Juan, DeQuan, Thomas, Tavion, DeAsia, LaNiyah Matherson; sister, Sheree Matherson; brothers, Bruce (Judy) McCaskill, Greg McCaskill, Jerome Thompson; stepchildren, Kentrail, Kelis, Lyric Hagler and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation 10:00 AM and Funeral Service 11:00 AM Monday, February 5, 2024 at MARLAN J. GARY FUNERAL HOME, THE CHAPEL OF PEACE EAST, 5456 E. Livingston Ave. (one block east of Noe Bixby, turn North on Lonsdale Rd.). Interment at Eastlawn Cemetery.
