Samuel Odell Hughes, a beloved dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend passed away to glory on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio.
Odell was born May 19, 1940, in Martinsville, Virginia to James Franklin ("Frank") Hughes and Pearl Ann McCloud. Odell grew up in a small, modest home where he and fifteen (15) other siblings were taught strong Christian values, the importance of sharing, and hard work traits under the nurturing care of their parents. During his early upbringing, Odell attended Pilgrim Baptist Church in Martinsville along with his siblings.
Odell attended Albert Harris High School in Martinsville where his peers were attracted to his gentle spirit and radiant smile. At an early age, Odell moved to Columbus, Ohio where he spent most of his adult life. He was employed by Kroger and spent over 20 years with that company! As for hobbies, he loved playing golf, enjoyed weekend picnics with family and friends, and cherished quiet time watching old Western movies! Other hobbies included gardening, local gatherings with friends at the "Jolly Pirate Donut" shop, and road trips up and down the East Coast in his van visiting family! After retirement from Kroger, Odell enjoyed time behind the wheel of his beloved 1996 Jaguar!
Odell was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Pearl Hughes; son, Chico; and siblings, Ephonia, Leon, Glenwood, Katie, Cogene, Frances, Peaches, and Earl.
He is survived in life by his wife, Joyce; sons, Myron and Delaires; and daughter, Keisha Hughes (John Caudill); nine grandchildren, Andrew Thomas, Japhia Golden, Cameron Goodrich, Taylor Miragliotta, Isiah Hughes, Elijah Hughes, Jayvier Gardner, Xavier Bass, and Gianni Bass; his living siblings, Shirley (Joe-deceased) Young, Jimmy (Vickie) Hughes, Jesse Hughes, John Obie (Alice) Hughes, Deatrice "Dee Dee" (John Wayne-deceased) Simmons, Clyde Hughes, and Benjamin Hughes; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Although we will miss his presence, our loving memories of Samuel Odell Hughes will remain with us throughout our lifetime.
