Seigle Lanier

November 22, 1937 — March 18, 2025

Columbus

Seigle Lanier Jr., age 87, better known as 'Larry' went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. Seigle was born November 22, 1937, in Bessemer, Alabama to the late Seigle and Essie Lanier.

Seigle was baptized at an early age at Macedonia Baptist Church in Bessemer, Alabama and was involved in many church activities. His biggest joy was when his youngest nephew, William Scott, became the pastor of the church and still serves as the pastor.

Seigle was a 1956 graduate of Dunbar High School in Bessemer, Alabama where he excelled in sports, especially football. He received a scholarship to attend college but chose to join the military. While serving in the Air Force in Columbus, Ohio he met his wife, Phyllis Harris. They married in 1961 and made Columbus, Ohio their home.

He was employed for 37 years with the City of Columbus as a supervisor in the Division of Parks and Recreation. He retired in 2000 but missed working so much he returned to work for three more years.

Seigle joined Love Zion Baptist Church in June 1962. He was a faithful and dedicated member for 60+ years until his illness slowed him down. He served in several ministries including Trustee, catering, bus driver for Vacation Bible School amongst many other church activities. He supported his wife in all her ministries and did it with grace and dignity.

Seigle was a devoted husband, a loving & amazing father, and very proud grand & great grandfather. He lived a life marked by his unwavering faith and even in his illness he always wanted to know what's going on at Love Zion Baptist Church. His one question was always 'do they remember me?'. He loved to travel, attend family & school reunions, and sporting events. Football was number one. He was a diehard Cleveland Browns fan for many years, but he finally said, 'they let me down, THEY GOT TO GO!'.

He is preceded in death his by parents, sister Elaine Scott, nephew Robert Scott, grandson Darius Lanier-Walker, and sister-in-law Ophelia Harris.

He is survived by wife Phyllis Lanier, daughter Sandra Elaine Lanier-Walker (Brian), adopted daughter Staci Brown, grandson Julian Seigle Lanier-Walker, adopted grandson Troi Brown, great granddaughter Tatum Miles, her mother Tanai Miles, nieces Marva Hogan (Roy), Christine Mathis, Barbara Harris, nephews William Scott, Jesse Scott, Carey Harris, John Harris and many cousins, great nieces and nephews.
