Sharen Ann Carter, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, born Wednesday, July 30, 1947, to the late Houser and Bessie Echols, lived a full and joyful life, bringing warmth, laughter, and compassion to those around her.
Sharen worked as a Head Start teacher for many years before making a career change. She began working for Department of Job and Family Services, where she was an Intake worker. This was a job she enjoyed as she was able to do one of the things she loved and that was helping others. She retired after 30 years.
Affectionately known as Aunt Sharen to many, she always opened her heart to all, and her home to those in need of a hot meal or a warm place to stay. Those that knew her, loved her and always looked forward to her cooking, or hearing her soulful voice. When Sharen Ann was around, you knew a good time was going to be had. She was also the queen of kicking you out of her house or room. She would definitely let you know when she felt you have overstayed your welcome. That would usually be after five to ten minutes, fifteen minutes on a good day.
In her free time, Sharen found joy in visiting the casino, playing bingo, and watching her favorite shows, including *Law & Order SVU* and *In the Heat of the Night*. She had a flair for life that made every moment special.
On Monday, March 24, 2025, Sharen transitioned to Heaven surrounded by her loved ones. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Terence Leslie Jr., and six siblings, Robert Echols, Houser Echols, Patrick Echols, Karen Echols, Paulette Echols and Matthew Echols as well as her mother-in-law, Naomi Carter.
Sharen is survived by her cherished children: Diane Carter McNary, Kenneth (Donna) Carter, Renee (Larry) Smith, and Ebony Carter. She was also a proud grandmother to Raymond Smith, Larry (Emily) Smith, Vermorian Carter, Mariah Carter, Kylil Carter, Ta’Vione Arnold, Eric McNary Jr., Ty’Aaron Arnold, and Eyriona Arnold. In addition, she leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Terence Leslie III and Taishun Leslie, as well as her supportive sister, Nona Fullen, sister-in-laws, Bertha Sue (Horace) Mahmood, Vicki Carter, brother-in-Law, Norman Carter, special friends, Gloria Robinson, Sondra Jones, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who felt like family.
Sharen will be missed deeply!
