Shirley Hunter, beloved mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother, aunt and cousin, and cherished member of the community, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 on July 27, 2024. Born on September 20, 1936, Shirley lived a life filled with love, resilience, and unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and the Lord.
As a young woman, Shirley married Maurice Jones, with whom she brought forth six beautiful children. Through her independence, she succeeded in instilling in them the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion. Later in life, Shirley was remarried to Pastor Robert Hunter, with whom she shared 19 years where they embraced in their love for each other and Christ before his death in 2011.
Shirley's greatest joy came from her family. She was a proud grandmother to a vast number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love for her family was boundless, and she cherished every moment spent with them. She was their rock, their confidante, and their biggest cheerleader.
A devout Christian, Shirley was an active member of her church, where she sang in the choir and supported numerous church outreach and charity programs. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, providing her with strength and guidance in all she did.
Shirley had a passion for giving, forgiveness, and turning strangers into friends and friends into family. She created an environment of warmth and comfort, where family and friends were welcomed with open arms and a warm smile.
She will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her compassionate heart, and her enduring legacy of love and kindness. Shirley's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and community. She leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished and remembered by all who knew her.
Shirley is survived by her six children Robin (Martin) Tolver, James M. Jones Sr., Larry (Leslie) Jones Sr., Mary (Michael) Conrad, Jonathan M. Jones, Jared (Angie) Jones and six stepchildren, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Maurice Jones and Robert Hunter, her parents, Minnie and Floyd Saunders, and her three brothers, Kenny (Alice) Saunders, George (Jackie) Saunders and James Saunders and a step daughter.
A celebration of Shirley's life will be held on August 10, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Bethel Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Missionary Julia Curtis who has devoted her time as a missionary to Native Americans in Arizona, a cause that was close to Shirley's heart.
