If you have ever met Akemi, you’ve witnessed a Miracle, Akemi was a Fighter, She has been a Vessel of Strength since day one, Akemi was a Warrior Princess, She was Courageous, and had so much Tenacity.
Akemi Davina Christian was born as a Micro Preemie on Tuesday March 26, 2019 in Cincinnati, Ohio at The University of Cincinnati Medical Center at only 23 weeks gestation. Akemi wasn’t due to be born until July 22, 2019, but God had other plans and that day; The Fight began.
After just 3 weeks of life the doctors didn’t think Akemi would survive. Things started to take a turn for the worse, and we were asked to “give up”, we didn’t. Our Faith had been tested, and shortly after we transferred Akemi to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where she remained until she was transferred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital as a Patient of their BPD Unit. In total Akemi spent 346 days in the NICU of 3 Hospitals before ever coming home.
Akemi had Chronic Lung Disease and Cerebral Palsy, but none of that stopped her nor defined her. She had a smile that would light up any room, and although she was non-verbal her laugh was so infectious, everyone couldn’t hear Akemi, but if you knew her, you could hear her laugh and looking at her you could see so much joy.
Akemi was a chill girl. She loved to rock, that was her thing. It kept her calm and showed how content she was. We had to be careful, because that girl could rock away. Akemi was silly, she was funny, she loved to laugh and “take your nose.” She enjoyed her lovey “Roo” the most. She loved to watch Boss Baby and Paw Patrol and later on Cocomelon and Gracie’s Corner. Akemi was also intelligent despite her delays. She was good at puzzles and she was determined to finish them. She enjoyed her shape sorter and was pretty good at sorting shapes. She could show you any body part if asked, and even sometimes when you didn’t ask. She knew most of her colors, and she also had began learning American Sign Language.
Lastly, Akemi loved to dance. If you needed a dancing partner you could always count on Akemi. She absolutely loved music. It all started with music therapy and mommy’s terrible voice, and ended with anything with a beat. She would literally yell over her trach for you, to turn the music on in the car, no sooner than you could get her strapped in. She loved “da baby”, he was no doubt her favorite. Whenever she would hear him she would run to the music source to see him. When you hear good music, think of Akemi.
